That's only true of the 'small' Rolls Royce. The big ones still use a development of the long established RR V8.


Bentleys use a lot of VAG parts and platforms, with a lot of extra finishing where you can see it. Which is no different to Audi's business model.

Eh? Don't paint everything with same brush. Especially as you drive a Mondeo 

Which I do and openly prefer it to VW products in the same market segment. My choice, yours is VW, mine isn't - simples. VW have been proven not to be trustworthy & contribute zero to U.K plc in terms of manufacturing or r&d jobs - which Ford certainly do. That's my opinion.

You do know who owns Bentley right? I mean at Crew they make:

Continental Flying Spur
Continental GT
Continental GTC   Bentleys

Used to make:

Arnage
Azure
Brooklands

It's also their HQ, main R&D site and where they are all hand made and hand-crafted.... so yeah VW do nothing for the UK!

I was going to go into VW car sales, VAT contributions and so on but cannot be bothered.

But I will mention that your Ford was made in Spain.

Ford shut Southampton Transit production and moved it to Turkey.
Ford ended UK car production in 2002, leaving just engines made here.

I'd put a bet on Brexit completion, Ford move last of their two production sites out of the UK 

Ok, my car was built in Belgium actually - but has a British built engine, with many many engines being exported to other Ford plants worldwide. How many engines do VW (not Bentley) make in the UK, that will be zero engines, assembly or components.

As far as dealer jobs & VAT are concerned, the same (flawed) logic applies to BMW & Meecedes & the rest. I'm not a fan of Jap cars - but at least Nissan, Toyota & Honda all make large volumes of vehicles here & export them. They create real jobs whereas VW don't.

I'm not sure where you are going with your logic - all I'm saying is that I'd rather have a Mondeo than a Passat as I think the Passats are boring, although admit that the CC looks nice. I'm entitled to my opinion. STEMO makes an excellent point about the capabilities of cars as well. I haven't called anything a "shi* box" as seems to be the common way on this forum by certain people - just stated my opinions in a respectful way.

All of the newer RR's use a BMW V12.
The only car still using the good 'ol six and three quarter litre V8 is the Bentley Mulsanne, in highly developed form. It is also has an bespoke platform.
The Continental and Flying spur are based on the VW Phaeton platform and the Bentayga (silly name) shares it's underpinnings with the Audi Q7.

Anyway. I actually like Ford I looked strongly at al Mondeo Estate before the VW. I just felt build was poor and no gas struts for bonnet? Felt cheap.

I'm looking very closely at S-Max as it looks for our needs.

It's not THE reason I picked Ford as a brand, I selected Mondeo (and I've had several now, although not as many Omegas as I've had), as it suited me best at the time. The jobs thing is a bonus - although not insignificant one. The jobs landscape changes with time so who knows what will happen re Brexit. I can't say that gas struts on the bonnet would ever be a deciding factor for me! My son & DIL went car shopping a few months back due to imminent arrival of a baby. The candidates were CMax & Tiguan, both cars were evens, but the Ford got chosen due to VW's emissions behaviour and previous arrogant behaviour by a VW dealer some years ago.

So choosing a car has lots of aspects as you know. Life would be pretty dull if we all liked the same thing wouldn't it?

I've been looking at Tiguan's, Sharan's and the Touran. Problem is compared to S-Max they are all very dull, also sod all petrol versions around.

Think MrsT would find Touarag a tad big

Its all personal taste I think, as I've shopped around again for a newer car, I've gravitated away from VAG only because certain things I want (and consider "standard" requirements) are extras and seemingly not that common. These include heated seats, DAB and bluetooth, fairly common on ford, volvo and VX, but much rarer on all the german brands.

It probably boils down to the german stuff holding its value better, so at any given price point, you get less for your money.

This is what brought me to the CC, Sports Leather with very comfy seats. (far better than Audi/Merc/Ford/Vx) - Heated seats, Xenon lights, Sat Nav, DAB, Bluetooth, but also support for Audio (for Spotify) - Some Audi's had bluetooth but no audio pair support for streaming  - Also USB input in glove box, twin colour displays, cruise, tyre pressure stuff. Normally all extra's on a lot of VAG, but standard on GT spec CC.

I looked at lots, Insignia, Mondeo, Jag XF/XJ, Audi's, Merc E's all sorts, but felt I got most for my money with the CC in terms of age/spec miles. I was surprised I managed to get a 13 plate with my budget and requirements.

There is something not totally right about this story though, that's 42k a year....or 800+ miles per week......given the driving they described that seems a hell of a lot! 

Are they sure it was not a manufacturing fault and the clocks not ticking over at Km intervals.

To put it into perspective, I do 500 miles per week and about 24k miles a year......but I have a defined 100 mile daily commute.

If you look closely at the pic of the odometer Mark, it does say miles on the display 

I could believe the mileage....some of their regular runs must 200-300 round trip.....plus other shorter trips soon mount up....

I do around 100 miles a day just driving around Swindon.....yesterday about 150 miles because of a trip to Bristol Airport...which took all afternoon because of delayed flight....and I didn't do a lot of driving in the morning either.....

Plus iirc VW are going to display it as an example of a high mileage VW.....so they must be confident of the mileage I would have thought....
