Familiar topic - leaky V6 rocker covers
« on: 11 May 2017, 19:57:19 »

I know there is a procedure for refitting gaskets to the V6 rocker covers.
If you want a more permanent repair, can the rocker covers be replaced? I am aware of the metal vectra rocker covers.
I think Omega rocker covers are no longer a new spare part (and would be costly). Is it plausible to buy used ones and try them?
The resealing cost is the gaskets  (£90?) plus labour (couple hrs?)
Thanks

Done properly, the standard ones are fine. Its when they are done badly...

Vectra covers "fit", but the oil filler is awkward, and any problems with the breather system tend to blow the crank seals, rather than the cam cover gaskets.

I wouldn't recommend changing away from the standard Omega, but your car, your choice :)

The covers are available from Vauxhall. And are monstrously expensive (£300 + when I last enquirer). They do come with the new gaskets though  :y

That's mega expensive!! I'd go to a different dealership if I were you.....I bought a brand new packaged pair of genuine V6 cam covers (complete with gaskets and o rings of course) late last year from my local Vauxhall garage for approx £160 (give or take a couple of £'s without me getting the receipt out).

That price isn't just ridiculous, it's obscene!
Unless the covers are distorted from over-tightening, second hand ones should suffice. Try sending a request to Breakeryard.com; they will message a whole host of scrappies for you and email those near you, with prices.

2.6.

Thanks for the responses.

I am nervous of used ones, because my mechanic might be unconvinced. New ones at 160 sounds good ...

I wasn't going to go down the vectra covers option.

How do you know secondhand ones haven't been over tightened then?
If it was a five minute job to change them, then it may be worth fitting secondhand ones to try them. But as it isn't....I'd rather do the job just once and be done with it.

That's a fair point, johnnydog, of course you canot know the degree of tightening, but I would have thought that distortion due such over-tightening would be noticeable?
Of course, I could be wrong.....I DID make a mistake once!

A friend of mine who has been a mechanic (sorry technician!) at VX for years says that when V6 Omegas were coming in regularly for leaking cam covers, they only used to change the rubber gaskets/ seals, and that invariably cured the problem. I suppise going back to when they were being done under warranty, VX would probably only authorise new seals as it would have been the cheaper option. If that hadn't cured the problem, then they may have replaced the covers.

Checking cam covers is I think easy enough. If they've "warped" due to over tightening-or is it age/heat that does it?-then they tend to "bow"outwards along their length,so all you need is a straight edge[a 12"inch ruler or similar]to check how true they are. That's what I did when I found mine  were out of true.

Forgot to mention I believe one or two on here are using aftermarket gaskets on their cars and last I knew were reporting no leaks.

They do seem inexpensive from Vauxhall - got a quote of £205 for both sides.
They are cheaper used, and they perhaps don't need to be perfect, but they would be £120, so worth the extra as I'm not doing the job.

Ok, clearly my local Vauxhall dealer are over charging. What dealers are you talking to to get these low (relatively) prices? Bear in mind these are the prices for me ordering through my garage where I work! So they should be the same as on TC if applicable
