Wounded front bumper!
« on: 29 May 2017, 22:49:20 »

I have a scuffed front bumper due to a close encounter of the embarrassing kind! It seems also to have collected a little of somebody else's dark paint - unless it is undercoat showing through?
Either way, my question is how best to refurbish it?
I am totally inexperienced in this kind of restoration and I would appreciate some simple, step-by-step guidance as to how to proceed, please. Don't assume that I know ANYTHING, except perhaps how to go out and buy a rattle-can!

Heres my reply for someone else a few weeks back Ron, that had a simular scratch, but Im kind of guessing yours may be Matalic Paint?, which is a bit harder to wash in using a rattle Can.

How deep is deep, easiest way is to use a Paint Pen or small Bottle with brush (ie. Paint Chips), fill the scrape so it protrudes more than the bumber slightly, leave to harden, really hard, days weeks, then wet and dry gently till flat then polish.

Otherwise your looking at Filling with plastic filler, and the usual, rub flat with wet and dry, a bit of Primer, rub flat then spray, wash in, with a Rattle Can final coat, bearing in mind its plastic.

Do they use Lacquer on Non Matalic (White) these days?

Thanks Zirk. The scuff isn't very deep; in fact I think I've collected more paint than I have lost, but I wouldn't swear to it.....T-Cut hasn't removed it yet.
It is indeed metallic and in that hard-to-find Star Silver, so obviously I'm going to have to search long and hard!
Having removed the unwanted free gift and I'm back to my paint - or primer - what do I do next?

Gently rub the extra paint off with 1500 wet & dry (wetted), -  or 1200 grade if you cant get hold of 1500. and you might find your own paint underneath is undamaged.  ;)
Silver is very difficult to blend in , in my experience. Time and patience is the key to any decent paint / bodywork repair.  :y

I guessed that this wasn't going to be a 5 minute job, Albs! Best place to buy that wet & dry: I was thinking Halfords?

This is one of those subjects thats hard to explain properly in words so id say watch a few youtube videos of people doing it and then decide if you think you can do it too.its not that difficult getting exccellent results with spray cans but you just need to take your time and do it one stage at a time and not try to rush it .paint colour match is another grey area .my brothers car is 147 star silver and seemed to match better with a halfords can whereas mine is 157 and actually was best with a holts renault colour. Trial and error im afraid ,even getting it matched at a paint factors and put in a spray can doesnt always guarantee a perfect match.idealy if you can paint down to a fold/line/edge etc on an area rather than the whole lot can help the paint blend in better.can you put any pictures up ?  ?

Cor, Rothko and Frost are a bit posh, GK!
I'll go and take photos shortly, cam.in.head, but in the past I've failed to get Dropbox to post pictures on here; not sure what I was doing wrong.
I wonder how hard it is to remove the bumper - must be a guide on here.....

Hopefully not bad enough to need to remove front bumper. Another idea thou. Depending on how bad or not the scratch is once you have bought some primer paint and clearcoat it all adds up and it would cost nothing just to call in at a few bodyshops just to see how much they would charge anyway.or theres the chips away type people or even have a word with the local taxi drivers .they usually know places .

The Black marks look like the left overs from the other object, the dark grey areas look like its cut through your paint work and ground down to the bumper plastic to me.

Might be easier and cheaper to hang out for a good second hand bumper in the right paint code IMHO.  ;)

Looks like machine guns in the front bumper  ;D, parking sensors I assume. I've a good Z147 front bumper but postage would be a bugger
