Heck of a shot
« on: 22 June 2017, 19:00:23 »

It's been reported that a Canadian sniper has killed an IS fighter with a 2mile shot.Admittedly I know nothing of the skill needed to make such a shot but it seems to me to be a heck of a feat.

Was he aiming at the IS fighter or just in the general direction of a group of people milling about?  ;D

So......he took into account the distance, the wind variation and even the curvature of the earth?

No, never, ever. Unless this was his 1000th attempt and he finally got lucky.

I'm sceptical.

Just look at the rifle and sight set up 8) 8) 8) 8)

A highly trained sniper must be perfectly able to strike a distant target, and if they really try hard enough, as this one did, take out a target at 2+miles :y

I tried out a night sight a couple of weeks ago that makes it easy to take a rabbits head of at 400 yards +. It was an amzing, and very expensive piece of kit.
However, as mentioned factors such as wind have quite an affect on the best shot with the best kit at a distance of two miles, which is why I'm sceptical.

But this equipment is in the hands of very highly trained specialist military marksman :y

No, never, ever. Unless this was his 1000th attempt and he finally got lucky.

Looking at the setup it doesn't seem implausible. As a cadet, our school used to shoot at the Bisley competition and the longest competitive range was 1000yards.

I am aware that's areound 1/3 of the distance this shot, but we were shooting over open sights, without a professional spotter, wind gauge etc. And the best of us could put a grouping of 3 shots in an area about the size of a bin lid (or a human torso if you think about it another way) and we were only children at the time.

I could easily believe that a professional with the right gear could make similar shots at 3-4x the distance.

If Clint Eastwood could shoot through a hangman's rope from a few hundred yards away without fancy optical sights .....  ;)  ;)

Ahh, another Bisley shooter. I remember it well (and very fondly!)

Like you say... 1000 yards with open sights it was perfectly feasible to group inside a 12" diameter circle ;) :y

I might be inclined to believe he did it....this time. But it's still a 1 in a 100 shot.
