The only time (other than when I'm running on fumes, and can't find petrol) I've ever driven economically ::)

I'm not sure my Mv6/Elite/whatever it is, is accurate. The CID states 10.9mpg !

Could be, if you're hoofing it.  Not managed a sustained run below 10mpg yet, managed a 9.something on my 15m 'test route' once in the MV6 ::)

Sh1t! down to 2 now? Reminds me of my mate's all-aggro. Ended up with 2nd and 5th. Wait until the valves bounce in 2nd then a very aggressive shift into 5th. :y

.. and that included reverse, so be careful where you park!

In an auto, thats all you need - it covers the huge majority of the speed range needed. Ideally 3rd is useful as well, as mine bangs off the rev limiter in 2nd at 85mph

That won't make any difference. Open a window, and it affects the aero dynamics, causing drag. Costs you the same in fuel as climate, but with less wind noise ;)

16mpg while towing on gas?

Get yoursef a derv, they do 30mpg towing...
