An observation
« on: 15 July 2008, 11:15:38 »

In the last month or so we have had 2  female members join and leave rather abrubtly.
I understand this forum is mostly made up of males but should we not be a little bit more understanding of newer members. we where all new at one time.
I do not want to appear to be a prude or anything like that but perhaps a slightlty less 'in your face' attitude could be adopted for welcoming female members.
I to have made my share of mistakes with posting and I no I have annoyed at least 2 members (poss more) in the past.
I do not want this post to sound wrong or annoy anyone, so if I have got it wrong I apologise.

I think until you've got the measure of new members it's difficult to know how they'll interpret a post that's perhaps critical, cynical or in jest and it's also difficult for them to know how seriously to take such a post from someone they don't know.

If they are new to the forum and perhaps a little nervous they'll probably lean towards taking posts "the wrong way", TBH.

The only solution is to tread carefully until someone is well established, and if you sense that something is being taken the wrong way stop digging and resolve the situation.

The last thing we want is to be branded an "odd bunch".

Agreed Kevin, a tread lightly approach would be nicer for new people. even if they make a mistake and annoy us, perhaps adopting the 'turn the other cheek' option until they get into the swing of things.
I think many forums have the odd 'odd bunch' I think it is almost the norm, but it is also something that can give a forum character.

Oh dear, it would seem as if I have caught religion or something.
I am not trying to preach or anything, honestly.

Collecting my coat.....

I would say its common sense really.  You wouldn't walk up to a stranger in the street and say something, then you shouldn't do it online either.

Saying that, I'd hate to see this forum become 100% PC.

As TB says ... common sense .... You know what you are trying to say when you post .. but the reader doesn't ... a pause before hitting the "post" button to consider just HOW a post MIGHT be taken by someone else takes but a millisecond and shows respect for other peoples feelings and points of view.

It has nothing to do with PC, prude, censorship etc etc etc .. it is all simply respect for others, and needs to be in both directions .. as poster and reader ... readers can misinterpret as easily as writers can mislead.

To be honest I agree with everything you have said here, but not just to newbie women members men too....

I have read quiet a few replies to Newbies who are asking things that have been asked time and time again, some of the replies are down right rude..... and to be fair I don't think you would say such things to these peoples faces.....

Now most of you know I love messing around taking the sap etc but come on guys We have all been Newbies.

Thanks for pointing out my glaring mistake,  ;D I did not mean to be sexist.
And the last thing I personally would ever want this site to be is politically correct.
I think others have said it better than I can, and that it is simply a respect issue, when joining a site I like to join, say hello, and then just watch and read for a while. But I still make mistakes.

Everyone makes mistakes, but that is no reason for people to be rude to others in my opinion.

Ive read and agree with 95% of the above.

Surely new members should take the time too read posts and generally soak in the atmosphere of a forum they have just joined rather then expect it too run/work a certain way and then throw there toys out of the pram if its not too there liking. :question

Agree with most of the above comments.  Its not about being "PC" (agree this forum should not apply nonsensical pc rules) but about applying a level of common sense before poating a reply.  If you take the p*ss you have to be prepared for others to do the same to you, and accept that.

Having said all that, one of the good things about this forum (ignoring all the good technical items and the in depth knowledge of all things omega) is that there is a level of good humoured banter and the whole forum operates with a sense of fun.

I noted recently that a couple of newbies seemed somewhat over sensitive to replies - one very recent individual started shouting and then physically threatened a more established member.  Noted admins acted on this very quickly.  It is impossible to satisfy everyone all of the time - remember theres no "f" in utopia!

By and large the admins do an excellent job of "policing" the forum and i hope the forum continues to operate in the current manner.

There - got that off my chest!
