I've been offered an S40 on an 04 plate with genuine 38k miles for under 500 quid. It needs a minor prang sorting on the driver's door and has rust scabs above the rear screen, but I don't know anything else about it at this stage, except that the MOT history isn't bad, and the deceased driver was a "careful" driver.
Can anyone offer a knowledgable opinion about this car's pedigree, as a possible replacement for a 3.2 Omega?

They're smaller than an Omega, and have dullness carefully designed in.


Check if it has the Mitsubishi GDI engine; if it does, then don't buy it!

As an '04 I'd imagine it to be a Phase2 car[Phase1 1996-2000,Phase2 2000-2004,Phase3 2004-2012]I believe the P2s had a Renault M3P or M5P gearbox[assuming manual]timing belt changes at 80,000mls/8yrs,can't recall whether it was GDI engine that had VVT or not[if so check that's ok.All were of course FWD and had a dual mass flywheel.If it does happen to be the later version make sure the handbrake recall has been done.Positive crankcase ventilation[PCV]can block so check for mayo and with engine running remove oil filler cap-there should be some suction there if it's ok.Other usual car buying checks apply of course,but at sub £500 shouldn't be too much of a risk.

So you're going to buy a pranged car that had a 'careful' owner?!   

Seriously though, sub £500, 38,000 miles and an MOT?  If it's tidy enough apart from the prang, what's to think about.
