A 100 yers ago Health & Safety was a very good idea. It stopped many brave men and women going to an early death, because of unacceptable risks.

But it ha become a problem in itself. Anyone now working in an office will be aware, of just how deadly a bottle TIPEX WITH THE TOP LEFT OFF can be. ( thousands can die)

Health and safety has replaced discretion and common sense and now tasks that are of almost insignificant danger are classed as too dangerous for many people to do.

My theory is this all H&S officers were bullied at school, and are nearly all called, Timothy or Norman. They are all aged about 50 years old, have never had a girlfriend and live with their mom.

They have never done anything more dangerous or risky than go to the shops on their own, without mummy holding their hand. Their objective is to make Britain completely free of risk of any sort.

Women do not find these sort of men attractive, myself included.

I have to agree, heath and safety is so over the top these days that sadly people are loosing the ability to risk asses on thier feet (like we have all done for hundreds of years) which, long term, will make the world an even less safer place!

Mrs TheBoy and I were considering similar things during the Olympics - why the Chinese were so good at a lot of things.  She said the fact our kids aren't allowed to do anything was a lot to do with it, and I think she has a valid point....

I understand what you are saying here, but do not forget the little girl who actually sang the wonderful song in the opening ceremony was not allowed to appear because she was "not pretty enough"!!!!

China, as with virtually everywhere else on this planet, is obssessed with appearance and what is best for all as decided on by central committees be it EU, USA or Communist!

I was in no way saying China was perfect - we know it has a lot of issues.  My point was in this country, we do not allow our youngsters to do anything for fear of them grazing their knees...

The problem is that as a business manager you have to become a H&S officer, and believe me your sterotypical profile of both H&S officers and business managers is far from the truth.

To repeat what I have written in your other thread over BT, but you decided to open up a new one specifically on H&S, I would state that:

The problem is that as a Manager, especially at middle / higher levels you are highly trained to understand that under H & S legislation you personnally can be held legally responsible for any breach in regulations that allows employees under your control to put themselves at risk, and worse still causes actual injury or death.  This can result in imprisionment and unlimited fine.      

Although I was on a great salary package, nothing is financially or morally enough to "allow" you to possibly put yourself at risk of prosecution or the thought of causing somebody's death.  That is the managers dilemma!   Would you "risk it"?  

Yes, we are too H&S obssessed at times, but that is life in 2008 and won't be changed anytime soon!

Taking H&S to the extreme, and the attitudes it promotes, is grinding this country to a halt, IMHO. And as our productivity falls, we buy more stuff from China, India, etc. where they are decades behind us in employee welfare. So, if you look at the big picture, it all achieves nothing at all.

We now have solvent free correction fluid -- no point in making mistakes now as can't get my daily high --- they haven't sussed the permanent markers yet

Health and safety policy should only be applied to activities that are significantly dangerous to our personal health and safety.
It is now applied in situations where there is no significant danger.
We as a nation have become too risk averse.
