Just spoken to my Vx dealers lead mechanic and he states that no routine maintenance plan exists for a gear box service on my Omega, or any other, and it should NOT be necessary unless a fault develops.

I think this confirms what a number of you have said or at least intermated :D :y :y

That's another few quid saved! ;D ;D :)

I changed the oil and cleaned the filters in mine at 105,000 .. at the meet at the army base ....facilities were good, 4 post lift and a nice big collection tank  :) The horrible smell and dark brown colour made me glad I did it. The car ran, until sold at 180,000, without a murmer from the gearbox.

IMHO if you have the facilities to do it/get it done at a reasonable cost it is worth doing. "Mechanical sympathy" is a phrase worth remembering when dealing with older cars.

The manufacturers don't tell you to service them as they don't actually want them to last that long !!

Mercedes used to state the same as Vauxhall in that the gearboxes were sealed for life. They've since revised that and now say they should have an ATF & filter change at 37k miles.
An ATF on your Omega can only be a positive thing. I did my ATF change myself on my drive using filter & gasket from Dave ??? of the Autobahnstormers

Less than £60 for the 2x 5L of dex 3 ATF plus new filter and some sealant for the sumps
and a DIY job ,pretty sure there's a guide  :y
Vauxhall will say "no routine maintenance plan exists "because when your gearbox dies they can sell you a brand new £40k car

They started that in the late '90s...prior to that, they were on the service schedule  ;)

Ford suggested that the A4LD box fitted to the Granada and Sierra was sealed for life... Had it been serviced every 40k, then replacing it wouldn't have become an 80k miles item ::)

It's all about making the fleet costs lower ;)

It's all about commonsense preventive maintenance, all oils deteoriate over time personally I would do it every 60,000 miles.

The filter can be washed out and re-used if you want to take that route.I bought a filter and gaskets for both sumps from ABS some years ago.Did it this way so I didn't have the hassle of waiting for the filter to dry/drying it quickly,so if there's a "next time" I can bolt in the original filter and good to go again.

You mean that main dealer 'mechanics' are mostly component changers working for a company that doesn't give a toss about the longevity of a vehicle beyond its warranty expiration?

usual A4LD failure is the rear bearing housing breaking up, causing a complete loss of drive. That's a plastic part that was poorly specified, and isn't down to not changing the ATF.

Keeping to the 'lifetime' ATF is the major cause of the friction materials wearing out sooner than is acceptable; a £100 fluid and filter change every 80k miles is far better on the wallet than a replacement transmission which is robust enough to last the entire life of the car.
