Scrap cat prices
« on: 26 February 2021, 16:20:12 »

Heard they steal cats from old cars nowadays. Are original 2.6 worth something, do I have to be worried ha ha. Perhaps cats are 90% of the car value? This is really what I read from newspapers. They jack the car up and use quick saws and disappear...

In years gone by, you did hear of cats being stolen,  but don't think it is as much of problem these days. Whilst they do have a scrap value, the prices of replacements have dropped considerably so I wouldn't be lying in bed worrying about it! Depends where you leave your car of course, whilst parked / unattended - what ever means they would use to remove them,  it is likely to make a fair amount of noise, so I personally don't think it is a issue to worry about.

There are still areas where it is prevalent, but it's usually 4x4's. Plenty of ground clearance to get under, do the dastardly deed and make a quick getaway.

Yep, in the South East it is now a major problem that the police are dealing with.  The latest news is that 10 people have been arrested by Kent Police in connection with cat thefts.  One theft was shown -CCTV images - on the local news with a car on a driveway, with the owner just feet away, having it's cat taken within minutes. :o :o >:( >:(

Apparently the value of the precious metals in the cats has gone up significantly recently.  :o :o

So, beware ;)

Happens quite a lot around here. I would like to see them try and nick the Cat off my French thing. Driverside driveshaft has to come off first.  ;D
2.6 / 3.2 cats arent worth much. 2.5 / 3.0 are though.

WOW  :o
I'll have to see what is stamped on the cats but they are OEM original
there's a company called WARR who give good prices so I'm told .
But, of course, scrap dealers are obliged to ask for the identity of anyone who weighs one in  ::)
I'm not having an identity crisis  :o
I have ID, driving licence, passport etc  :P
I could probably even get Mrs Builder to dig out the relevant paperwork for ownership and scrapping of the cars  ;)

Cat theft is a problem around here.

They prefer newer cars, because the cats are newer and have more precious metals left. They prefer hybrid, because the cat is used less and has more precious metals left.

A chap I worked with had the cat cut off his Toyota Prius in the works car park in broad daylight. He had it replaced but less than three weeks later they returned and cut the new one off. He was so pissed off he got rid of the car. They put a big trolley jack under the floor pan to lift it, causing damage, and let the jack handle fly up and smack a dent in his door when lowering it.
The strange thing was, on our works security cameras, it showed the thieves drive straight up to his car and jack it up as bold as brass. The car park is huge so we assume they'd had an initial look before returning.

Its about 60 seconds, start to finish, to get them off the Toyota hybrids:
