Excellent wheel refurb.
« on: 25 March 2021, 16:18:35 »

Had 4 new tyres on the Range Rover a fortnight ago & had the best of the old tyres put on to a 5th alloy that came with the car , the guy said it was a bit scruffy compared to the others which I had to agree with said he could sort it for 20, he dropped the wheel round to me about 10 minutes ago it looks absolutely as new , what a bargain ..😀

Yes....a good refurb can make a huge difference to a car. i have been thinking about this myself but the alloys are pretty well unmarked apart from a few minor dinks.

When I had my 190e Merc back in 2006/7 I had all 4 refurbished for 220, when this young lad said he could sort it for 20 I expected just a good clean up, but it's like new repainted and kerb marks all gone.👌

Going rate around here is 70-75 per wheel.

Could be a 'Smart' repair for that sort of money, as opposed to a full tyre off, acid dip strip back and powder coat. Smart repair is outer face only tidy up with the tyre still on. My lad used to do that when he had his paintless dent repair business and it tidies them up. I had to have a full strip back on all of mine though as the lacquer was flaking around the bead, causing the tyre to slowly lose pressure. The refurb was excellent, the wheels looked like new and it sorted the tyre bead, but all four cost me just over 200 by a company that WIM used to use. Still looked good over five years later.  :y
The main thing is that you're happy with the end result, so nice one.  :y

I think that you are probably right it does look good now, a real shame to put it in the cradle underneath.

There's wheel refurbs and wheel refurbs. Usually for around 40, they break the bead of the tyre to rim, put a plastic shield under the edge of the rim, and set to work with an orbital sander to 'sand' the damage out. Its then sprayed in the back of a van or workshop. Sanding the rim like this looses the profile of the  rim, and the quality / thickness of paint is poor and quite thin relative to powder coating and certainly not as durable.
For double that figure, the rims are dipped, totally stripped and then any damage is alloy welded, and then reprofiled to the original, before powder coating.
The former is the cheap repair that many mid range main dealers perform to prep cars for sale; once driven off the forecourt they tend not to be interested how long it lasts. The latter is usually done when the wheels are sent to a specialist wheel repairer for refurbing.
I certainly know which type of wherl refurb I would go for...

It's a spare that's going to be under the car in a cradle, so will get covered in crap, so this will do for me a quick hose off if it's ever used.

If you want wheels repairing, Birmingham Powder Coating. I can't beat the prices. If you pay for wheel repair around the West Mids, odds on they are taking it here. In fact a local place to me charges a nominal fee to take your wheels, remove tyres, take them down there for fixing and put your tyres back on when they are returned. They will also lend you a set of wheels to keep you moving.

Last time I took a wheel to get a quote on a refurb - which did admittedly include a flatspot repair - they wanted 200 :o. Although they didn't seem that keen on doing it, I get a feeling they were worried about colour matching with the other wheels. So that might have just priced it stupid.

Tell me more about the Smart repair, as the spokes on my Pussy ones look like a bit of corrosion has got under the lacquer.

I've used that WIM recommended place before - great job - but I've no way to have all 4 wheels off the car at the same time for a week or 2.

Smart repair is pretty much as johnnydog explained. They insert plastic under the tyre rim and treat any dinks, kerb rash or flaky bits prior to painting. It's a tidy up option on the outer face only normally, mainly used to make vehicles on the garage forecourt look nice.  :y

Two trolley jacks and two axle stands here if you want to borrow them.  :y  I'm in Bicester a fair bit for essential business and you're not much further away, so if you go for it let me know...... or I have space on my drive for an abandoned Jaaaaag with no wheels on.  :y ;D  I'm sure that the full acid dip, strip, treat and powder coat on mine at the place that WIM used was around the 50 mark back in 2014/2015'ish. They charged extra for any repairs required (in my case there was no damage other than flaking lacquer), plus extra if you dropped the car off and left it there for them to take the wheels off. They did do a decent job though.  :y

On that subject, there's some stuff on the market called 'Wonder Wheels'. It's been about for many years and is aptly named, because after you've used it you 'Wonder' where your lacquer has gone.  ::)
Good for cleaning the patio though.  :y

Wheel Works in Crawley can do them 'while you wait'. obviously you pay a premium for the speed, but it's still a full refurb.

The smart repairs have consequences... as an example, my last Insignificant had 20" wheels. these were a bit shabby, so I asked for them to be refurbished as part of the sale.

I required four new tyres in as many months from side wall failures, first discovered by having a puncture repaired... whilst a legal repair, the side walls were trashed inside the tyre. A blow out and two other replacements later (all 4 tyres) and they were all found to have the same degradation on the outer sidewall taken to be from the smart repairer knocking the outer sidewall off the bead to 'repair' the wheel faces.

I'd expect a 20 wheel repair to be as good as a 1 car wash.
