Afghanistan
« on: 09 August 2021, 18:13:50 »

For 20 years the western worlds most powerful militaries battled the Taliban and apparently reduced them to a rag tag guerrilla outfit.  At the same time they spent millions, probably billions training and equipping the Afghan National Army.  Yet as soon as the western countries pull out, the Taliban are routing the ANA with apparent ease.  :-\

How can this be?  ???  How are the Taliban so powerful? ???  Who funds and equips them? ???  China? Russia? Iran?  ???

Did the USA, UK and other coalition partners take their eye off the ball and so the Taliban regrouped under their noses?  ???  :-\

It seems to me that Afghanistan will become a humanitarian tragedy on an epic scale if the Taliban are allowed to take over again and if so, Europe had better brace for another wave of refugees/migrants.  ::)  :-\

If we hadn't left all the kit behind, they might have been stuck with a couple of Toyota Hiluxes, a box of ammo and a pile of AK47s...

Agreed Tigger. The outcome is a disaster.

Merkel has changed her stance on refugees. No longer open arms, other countries have got to help. Current estimate is 370,000 on the move. And why wouldn’t you leave your home?  That is the problem.

It's disgusting how these soldiers sacrifices have come to nothing , give it 6 months and the Taliban will have complete control of the country and turn it back to the stone age  >:(

Maybe. Cubans travel to Russia on " holiday" to cross a river on a lilo to get into Europe.

Afghan refugees might as well walk to Europe if they have been displaced from their homes. At least there might be a life for them here.

No comments on Tiggers original comment about just what has gone wrong. The West stamped out the Taliban over twenty years and leave and twenty minutes later they have won back huge chunks.

There's nothing new about this, we did it in 1842.

And again in 1880.

Then nearly 100 years later, the Russians had a go.

Each attempt has led to a glorious retreat, leaving the locals firmly in charge. Still

Afghanistan is no longer an important trade route, so we have no reason to be there unlike the Victorians. It's a shitty place that's perfect for winning a guerrilla war, which they've been doing for centuries.

The Taliban(anti-American, mostly) is just the Mujahideen renamed and pointed at the new 'invaders'

Probably just melted into the mountains and waited for the infidels to pack up and leave.

Perhaps... Probably....

But were are they getting their weapons and munitions from?

Who funds them?

Where have they been training?

Pakistan, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia?

The Taliban make good money from drugs and mining rights too.

They've lived there for centuries. Nothing much has changed, except some influence from outside. But it was also a major trade route for centuries, so influence isn't unusual. When your religion encourages extremely conservative thinking, that influence has to be useful - what use are fancy electronics you can't use or power when you can't afford to keep your children alive from illnesses we have eradicated? Or even books if you can't read? It's been proved repeatedly that the best way to reduce extreme poverty and population problems is clean water, education for everyone and contraception. Note that the Taliban were are assiduous about persecuting teachers and destroying schools.

You don't need much weaponry to fight that sort of war; consider how much kit Russia and then the West threw at them, and the minimal effect it had. And simple firearms are not difficult to make. The hard part is ammunition, which you steal. Or buy:

The valuable crop is opium, and has been for centuries. We buy it. Their money came from us.

Why would they go anywhere else to train for fighting in their own region? Guerrilla warfare isn't about fighting large battles, or even skirmishes; it's hit hard, unexpectedly and melt back into the background. You can't tell that one local is a fighter and another a farmer just by looking at them. We've already covered that high tech weaponry isn't appropriate for the fighting they do.

Invading Afghanistan has always been a moronic thing to do. We never learn.

If the Humvees on tellybox are any indication, then there's no shortage of equipment in the country for them to be getting on with, not to mention all the arms that the Russians, Iranians and Pakistanis have been slinging their way :-X
