Great update James.

Glad you are avoiding pay roads where you can. they tend to be bland

Depends what you want; having done it several times, I know Calais to the Spanish border(via Rouen, Tours, Poitiers, Bordeaux, Biarritz) on the autoroutes is a comfortable 10 hour trip in an Omega and I'd rather have the extra time at my destination.

We have done it loads of times. Rouen is a great city in the centre but otherwise a congested hell hole and I believe they have introduced ULEZ that varies with pollution level. Bordeaux is a congested big hell hole but again the old historic centre is beautiful. Having said that, I agree better to get France done with and get to Spain where it is more civilised and cheaper, a lot cheaper.

The run from Bordeaux to the Spanish border is one of the most boring roads on earth and fuel is expensive. Granted you can motor along at 130 kmh since they three laned it.

Unless you're on a time crunch, you'll see more on the back roads and in urban areas you still make decent progress with less traffic...

Incidentally, you know you're in Europe when the beer is served in a wine glass :D

Six days without an update! Either having a great time or changing an auto gearbox somewhere.

Went for eight days but coming back in Feb 2025.

Sorry just been having great time. Omega going strong, including the peachy AR35 ;)

2000 miles in now. And lots more to go.

We are at an all inclusive resort now for three nights of doing absolutely nothing (including driving) other than eating and (mainly drinking) too much

I shall post a full update today or tomorrow

Got overtaken by a prefacelift gay-gold Spanish Omega somewhere between Caravacca and Granada on a dual carriageway. We both exchanged a toot-toot and a knowing grin/wave 😁

So far on this trip we have covered 2000+ miles and have seen two Omegas - the one above, and another (gay gold) prefacelift in France (who also waved!)

Looks like you have already passed through my area. We are still stuck in Scarborough. Back in Spain for two weeks from Sunday1st Sept. if you are still in the locality it would be good to meet up.

How is the air con holding up?

On the way home now. Drove from Murcia today up to
Tossa De Mar in the north east of Spain. 7 hours on the road plus stops.

Avignon in France tomorrow.

Dijon the next day.

Ypres in Belgium the next (not least for the Meningate service)

Calais to Dover on Friday  :'( :'(

We have named the Elite “Colin” and he is still going very strong indeed. A good 2500/3000 miles in now.

We even drove the old girl into Gibraltar.

Had a result. We were on the red light crossing the border, and “morrisons” fuel there was only a fraction over a quid a litre!!!! Got a tank full for under 70 quid. E5 too.

I am a non smoker myself but also bought some tobacco back as a gift for a friend. £7.40 a pack there - I’m told it’s £38 at home for the same pouch!

Obviously only took the permitted limit of 5 pouches each.

Can’t get over how cheap it all is there!

What is also interesting is that we had to prove stuff on the way out.

“Where is your hotel booking”

“Don’t have one, haven’t booked tonight yet, we are taking it day by day and seeing where we end up”

“Show my your flights home”

“Don’t have any flights, we came on a ferry”

“But your last stamps were France not Spain”

“Yes we drove here from Calais”

“What all the way here, in that”

“Yes officer”  ;D ;D

Will post loads more photos / info about the trip when home.

I’d love to do it as we go but don’t want to spend evenings with SWMBO on my phone  ::)
