I just Bought a Motorcycle!
« on: 11 September 2008, 19:26:24 »

A 1991 FJ1200 to be precise -  Haven't even see it yet!

Off to pick it up on Saturday all the way down to Frimley. Bottled riding it 200 miles home so I've rented a Transit.

Wife finally relented to 'let' me have one again when I finally agreed to go to Flippin' Disneyland in Florida next year. Actually she was threatening to take our 7 year old without me if I didn't stop running the hyped up wonderful world Disney down. So I've got to behave and stop spoiling it for everyone else.

Good choice.   :y  I run a 1990 G plate 3CV and have done for several years.  It can still keep up with the big boys if you are prepared to give it some stick.  Like an Omega, it can still lift up its skirts and outleg many a poseur on a new shiney toy that does not want to get down and dirty....   :y

And you WILL have fun on a FJ1200. Top bike and one of the quickest for years.

You will probably be changing out of first at about 60 with another 4 more cogs to go  ;D ;D ;D

Frimley's not too far from me. Did most of my growing up there (what little I've done so far) so if you need directions or someone to go and have a shuftie prior (not that I know the first thing about bikes, TBH)...

It could be mine .I bought a nnew FJ 12 in 1991 on an H plate .It was black and had the 17 " front wheel instead of the earlier 16".Great bike with loads of torque and 125 BHP.

This one's blue.  I have never even ever ridden one but always fancied one in my younger CX500 and VJ600 days. This one has done 80K miles but only 3 owners from new and now owned by the chap who runs the FJ owners club website. A steal at £650 with full luggage and all the recommended mods.

Hey - it gets better. The bike is eligible for classic insurance. Only £111 per year! I have not even ridden a bilke in 5 years!

Never been to Disney World or any of the other trashy stuff in Florida and I'm not looking forward to it...........oops must stop being so negative about it or she'll take the keys.

Stand by for the road test report on Saturday evening

Hopefully not from a Hospital bed! Sorry to sound like a Wan„er but statistically your in the born again group of riders who are most likely to have an accident within the first week of ownership after a long period away from bikeing. The mentality being a bit "yeah, i know what i am doing i use to have one of these" give it a big hand full and over shoot a junction into the path of a bus. For opps sake go steady until you get used to it. THEN give it some. Maybe have a word with your local instructor and have a brush up. Sorry to be a grump...no really.

Great bike the Fj, good 2 up on a long trip. Look out for caliper seals binding on the caliper pistons and warping the discs, and oil level. Yams known faults of that era esp. with those miles. But your man will have covered all that by the sound of it. Hmmm...that all sounds negative. Not my intention.

Have fun, i wanted one when it came out. It helped start the hyper sports class. One of the first rocket ships. Happy hooning.  :y

Well I got the FJ back safe and sound. All the old receipts are there. Took it for a wee but cautious blast on Saturday night. Felt great. But it was pretty filthy and in need of some TLC and a service. So on Sunday I started stripping it down, applying gunk everywhere and blasting it with the power washer. Very theraputic and quite a nice way to spend a Sunday! The garage is now strewn with bits and a naked bike. I'm already working on a shopping list of new bits.
