A few hours at Viezu.
« on: 29 September 2024, 17:26:04 »

Dyno test to see if all  369 Bavarian horses and 369 Bavarian 'torques' are there. :)

It seems that BMW are very conservative with their power and torque figures.

Rolling road test figures at end of video.

Very nice and lots of torque coming in early and flat bet it pushes you back a bit on the seat🤣🤣👍

Nice.  :y  They didn’t accidentally remove the electronic speed limiter while it was plugged in did they.  ;)

On a forced induction car, the manufacturers figures are pretty accurate as the power is very measurable and controllable via the sensor set (keeps the insurance companies happy) but, rolling roads are far from accurate, loads of assumptions and compromises in the calculated values  :y

And most tuners and RR operators tend to claim more loses in their RR than actually exist, as it increases the go/pub bragging rights of the car owner, who walks away happy....

For a limp-wristed M-lite car and not a real M car she is pretty quick. ::)

Most  M240i seem to make around 400BHP/400 ft lb as stock regardless what BMW quote. I'm guessing the extra 45 BHP and 75 ft lb come from the JB+ that is fitted, and supposedly allows an extra 3-4 PSI of turbo boost.

I also use 99 octane fuel where possible. Not sure if it makes a measurable difference to BHP/torque or if it is just placebo. :)

On an engine like yours I think it probably would make a difference.
Putting it in an old V6 Omega wouldnt.

Agreed....Signum V6 seems to run fine on cheapest supermarket shit. Returns around 26 MPG according to the trip computer.

On the 230 mile round trip to Viezu the BMW trip computer showed 35.2 MPG......including the rolling road tests.

Back in the day my old Triumph  2500S would manage about 13 MPG around town and probably less than 20 MPG on a run even when using 'overdrive' as much as possible. :-X

The 3/4 psi increase would certainly explain your elevated gains  each 3.9 pounds of boost is equal to an increase in compression of 1.   Example…. Obviously not your cars figures but From 10.5.1. To 11.5.1.   It’s quite a big engine too so any increase is of course going to have a bigger effect. As for the fuel as long as your car is capable of adjusting the timing automatically you’ll gain a tad there too. The compression ratio I quoted would be static but of course I mean more boost higher compression more power when pushing on😁

My 3.2 Elite seemed much more eager with better throttle response when I started using E5 99  RON fuel instead of the previous E5 95 RON (before E10).
It has had nothing else but E5 99 since.
I get more mpg than that towing a 13' caravan with my current Triumph 2500S. Maybe you had a real lead foot at the time or a more youthful attitude to using its performance than you would today ;) (!!) or maybe it wasn't set up properly, but I'd struggle to get it down anything like those figures!

Twin SU carbs that were probably well worn at 80,000 miles.

Back then I used a Colourtune, and I could only get the car to run smoothly and without hesitation if I set it up to run rich.

New carbs or needles may well have helped but I was only 23 and didn't have a pot to piss in... :-X

How much extra boost did your Evo receive before it went bang? ::) >:D
