2.5 V6 ticking noise
« on: 11 June 2025, 19:12:21 »

Hi all,

As the title suggests, my 2.5 V6 has a clattery ticking noise (has done for a year now), which has been dismissed as lifters, normal for the engine, etc etc by several people, but having listened to other 2.5s, I'm simply not convinced it's normal at all. The cambelt was done last year (it was after this trip to the mechanic when the noise started), the oil and filter are fresh.

I've uploaded the video demonstrating the noise here: https://youtube.com/shorts/rYNOMnP4-lY?feature=shared

I hope that someone would be able to shed some light on this.

Thanks in advance.

The audio hasn't come out great on that vid, but you can here a slight ticking.  Likely causes are a lazy lifter or the exhaust gasket/EGR.

If not already done, I'd consider blanking off EGR to rule that out.

as above . not too clear on vid
also maybee try a quick run with aux belt off to eliminate anything it drives or the tensioner .

Hi both,

Thank you for the replies. It's surprisingly difficult to capture the noise with a phone - though it is actually quite pronounced in real life.

An EGR blank is actually on my list. Lifters do seem to be the general consensus, so an investigation may have to occur at some point as well. The only thing which had made me sceptical is that the Wynns lifter treatment I put in with the last oil change had made little to no difference.

My biggest concern was it being a cambelt noise.

Does it go away when it warms up?

Sounds like an exhaust manifold tick. That it's been present for a year suggests that it's not a significant mechanical issue.

No, not much difference when it warms up. If anything, it's actually quieter when cold before the revs have dropped.
