Incidentally what is the difference between a 330D and the 335D as they both share the same 3 litre straight six lump?

Good choice.

The 535d is a twin turbo (one small turbo and one large), whereas the 530d is a variable geometry single turbo. 

Incidentally, at one stage the 525d, the 530d, the 540d, and the 550d all used the 3.0d block. The 525d was a down tuned 3.0d. 

Probably performance overkill at Tigger's age.

This is what I should have bought instead of the Chrysler. They're invariably in a nice old man spec with lots of toys and comfy seats and yet a remap alone will add 100hp and 170nm

And mightily expensive to refurb both including bypass actuator. I’ve done a couple 😵‍💫.  Stick with the single unless you’re  well off🤣

I'd argue that.300bhp and 450ft lbs is probably enough for a big diesel cruiser, so for my money I'd take a remapped 525/530d over the 535.

That said I had the same lump in my 335d and I couldn't help wondering what a remap might have done for that...

On the 530d, Hartge tuning use to replace the intercooler with a larger one and remove the electronic limiter when doing a remap. This would increase the top speed to an alleged 170’ish mph. This puts it in line with the D5 Alpina (535d) which has a 170mph+ top speed. 
I’ve had enough of these to know just how quick they can reach the 155mph limiter. They pull like a train to around 125mph, then have a very slight lag for a few mph and then pull like a train again to the speed limiter.   
It’s a lovely engine/gearbox combo, and is plenty powerful enough without any mods.    If I ever become interested in speed again, this is the engine I’d go for.

It's a brilliant combination the N57 with a ZF 8 Speed in the 530D. Absolutely love driving mine, its a bit too effortless sometimes! Things to watch out for and fix on F10 / F11's are headlights, timing chains (realistically full uprated genuine BMW timing chain kit, all the bearings and oil pump is the way to go but expensive), don't skimp on discs and pads either.... worn front tension arms give wheel vibration issues that feel just like warped discs. It sounds like expensive stuff but its par the course on a big barge with a big diesel engine in it.

Should add that I had the full chain kit, bearings, pump etc on mine at 137K for peace of mind, no chain rattle and when the camcover was removed the internals were spotless (I change the oil every 5K and use genuine filter and Liqui Moly specific oil) and the chain showed little signs of stretching.   You hear of cars with half the mileage rattling like a skeleton in a biscuit tin, but infrequent oil changes and driving them like you stole them from cold are probably the cause in my opinion.

I was based in Munich at the time on project work, honestly officer.

Hmmm.... I may have bought alot of expense and aggro with this BMW..... 

It's a bit smoky when driven hard and sometimes there's a puff of smoke when started from dead cold in the morning.

The fella I bought it from told me that it had been smoky and the EGR had been deleted and it had been 'chipped' and that had sorted it. There was no evidence of smoke when I went to see it and test drove it. 

Today I took it to the local BMW specialists for them to check it out and they think that as well as the EGR delete, the DPF has been tampered with/gutted/or partially gutted as they found the exhaust back pressure was showing negative values (-4 mbar) when positive values are expected.

They said that its best to live with it as it is, but it may or may not pass an MOT and if it fails, it will mean a new DPF, possibly a new EGR and coded back to stock. Ouch!   

I've checked the emissions test printout from the last two MOTs and they have very different readings , but I don't know when the EGR was deleted and possibly the DPF tampered with.    On the upside I guess I don't have to worry about the DPF clogging up. Every silver lining!

But, since you didn't, what more can you do other than to hope it passes its MOT. When is it due?

New fuel and air filters should improve matters.

If it's been badly tuned, then the excess fuel comes out as coal.
