An Hour to Kill so took a test drive in a chinky MG
« on: 15 September 2025, 19:24:34 »

Mid-range model, so only 1 motor and a paltry 400 BHP. It went well enough, though. Wouldn't buy one new, as I imagine it will depreciate like falling off a high cliff. And there is also the government Luxury Theft Tax to consider, which runs for the first 5 years regardless of whether you are the first owner or not. Rachel from Accounts needs to raise this from £40,000 to something like £100,000.

I mean, how can you have a luxury tax applied to a Chinky built MG? It's ridiculous.

At the risk of sounding like a right wing thug, there are illegal immigrants to put up in posh hotels, and the lame and lazy to pay for.

According to my Lens Recognition App that's an IM5, sold over here as an MG EV.
Your "Hell will freeze over before I even consider an EV" statement requires a bit of fine tuning.  ::)  :)

Correct. :y

Looks pretty generic to my eyes and I imagine most people would think it is a Tesla.

Dual motor version comes with 750BHP... :o :o :o :o

From the photos it actually looks ok'ish, apart from the Lego wheels, but then all EV'S appear to go down that route with the wheels.  :-\

This the model 3 and the BYD seal all look pretty similar to me. In a few years this should represent a good chunk of performance for the money  :y

Aerodynamics are very important for milk floats, even the wheels.

As is the rolling resistance of the tyres.

You remind me of my Uncle who when I was a kid would only ride British motorcycles. Bonneville's, Commando's etc.  He hated Japanese bikes and referred to them as Crapanese.  :)

One fateful day he took his latest Bonneville in for service and they convinced him to test ride a Suzuki GS850. He came home with it, never had a British bike again, and thought that Japanese bikes were the best thing since sliced bread!  ;D

I've not owned a British bike.

All Jap when I bought my first age 16. It was just old men who rode Brit bikes that leaked oil and wouldn't start.

However, I'd be happy to own a modern 3 pot 2500cc Triumph Rocket 3. :y

My Dad had British bikes and that was his thinking also.  :y  I had Japanese bikes and apart from the easy starting of Jap bikes compared to British bikes, the oil that you put in a Japanese bike actually stayed in the bike.  ;D  Even my Dad had to concede that point.  :y

Most Brit iron came with engineering dating back to the 1930's, so was hopelessly out of date. They also had vertically split crankcases that were just perfect for pissing oil all over the garage floor.

The Japs had horizontally split crankcases so didn't tend to leak much......also electric starters so fewer broken ankles when a big twin decided to kick back. >:D

No leaks.
Electric start.
Shafty.....so no oily chain.

Bit of a fat bastard though. :)

Yep my Dad too.  When I was 16 and got my first bike, a Kawasaki AE50, he made me put an old tea tray under it to catch the oil leak.  ::)

When I told him it didn't leak oil, he told me that bikes always leak oil and was amazed when he saw that mine didn't!  ;D
