Any of you guys know much about them as i'm looking at one with a dodgy CVT gearbox, it's a 53 plate drives forward but won't select reverse gear.

If I remember correctly, the CVT gearbox is the one that doesn't 'creep' when you lift your foot off the brake? If that's the case, I seem to remember that they are a bit of a nightmare when doing a reverse hill start.

Imagine trying to parallel park into an uphill space with no clutch and nothing to hold the car except the foot brake. You either go nowhere or you shoot backwards with only the throttle to control speed.

Of course, if this isn't what the CVT means then just ignore what I've just said.  :y

Well that don't sound too good, but it's a 53 plate with 87000 on the clock cos' the gearbox is dodgy he wants £1800 i think i'll try and get it down a bit from that. Just the fella said it drives forward but won't select reverse, was wondering if it was something more simple.

I seem to think its like the old DAF system.
2 drums with a band  the front drum starts small and gets bigger as the speed rises and the rear drum starts large and gets smaller.
The clutch is problem as it drags so daf put a diaphram into there system to stop the drum when going from forward to reverse. My guess is that failed hense no reverse. But early daf's didnt have it you just stopped the engine and restarted after selecting reverse
Sorry just a passing me ander

In theory ,the perfect transmission, dont think it has been perfected in practice yet though.

I test drove Volvo 340 with one of those once. ;D

Throttle controls RPM. The harder you press it the more the engine revs its' nuts off. Meanwhile the car pulls away at a speed determined by how much the belts are slipping.

In theory the perfect transmission indeed. In practice a total bag of sh1te.

I am sure they've got better since then, but I still don't like the idea. I would buy it cheep and do a manual conversion on it.

The guy said it drives forward fine in auto, selects all gears, changes at the correct revs etc and also drives fine in tiptronic. But it won't select reverse. £1800 he want but he isn't open to offers' what do you guys think??

I would pay about £4k for a 3yo VectraC at auction......however that one is 5 years old......so prolly worth about 2-3k at auction......and with a fubared g/b prolly worth £1k......imo. 1.8k seems a bit steep to me.
Plus you need to look at are there any 2nd hand CVT boxes available?? If not, a new box would be expensive i would have thought.
If your not planning on diy with a 2nd g/b.......you may end paying more than the car is worth at 1.8k for it.

Edit.....however if g/b isnt fubared and its a simple electrical problem......then you could end up with a bargain  :-/

Have a gander on the VectraC forums for a similar problem  :y

I may be barking up the wrong tree here but 2 things spring to mind... 1. I didn't think Vx made a CVT box and 2. Even if they did then there wouldn't be a tiptronic mode because that wouldn't be CVT!

On top of that... The 1.8 vectra is horrendous on fuel and emissions IMHO! SWMBO had one as a company car and it was awful!
