2.4 Volvo Engines
« on: 11 May 2026, 13:36:49 »

What are they like to work on? It would be in a 2001 V70, which I think is the Ford era. The temp banger Volvo I had from 2008 was quite nice to work on, I know that was a Ford engine as well, but loads of space in the bay and looked decent enough DIY.

Reason for asking is for the past 4 years I've seen this silver V70 parked on someones drive during the school run. It's not moved in 4 years, looks like it last had a valid MOT in 2022. Thinking maybe it had a snapped/slipped cambelt, based off age rather than miles.

I did a bit of snooping and did an MOT check on it, it only has 55,000 miles. Previous MOT's nothing serious, odd bulb, tyre here or there.

If MrsT's Zafira Tourer blew up, I'd be highly tempted to knock on his door and make an offer.

My experience was pretty favourable, that age will be a B5244S (or B5244T if its turbocharged) which is a volvo lump, not a later derived ford unit (2007 onwards I thin). I had a D5 S80 for a couple of years and it was insanely comfortable and never let me down in the c40,000 miles I put on it. If the timing belt has gone, they are interference engines so valve damage is very likely, but a new head would probably not set you back much.

TBH I wouldn't bet on there being anything wrong with it, like mine it could have been someone who just drove less and less, then stopped as they age.

Like all transverse engines, access down the cam belt side of the engine is sh!t, but that's par for the course and I don't remember the D5 being any worse than anything else I worked on, and much better than the galaxy when I tackled the cam belt on that  :-X.

Thanks, from what I can see it's being used as storage and there is a smaller car always parked next to it that hardly moves either.

Nice to know it would be a proper Volvo lump!

Could well be a "down sizing" of car as you say, driving less.

Its been parked up a long time, I reckon it would take a lot of time and effort to bring it back TBH...   ...things you always say you lack?

Volvo D5's are virtually indestructible and so you won't need to work on it!  :y    ;D

Seriously though, I had my 2004 V70 2.4 D5 for about 6 years and did about 60,000 miles and engine wise, I changed the top engine mount and 3 or 4 oil changes. I didn't have any record of a cambelt change and when I sold it, the new owner didn't have any record of a cambelt change either!  :-X  ::)  ;D

Apart from that, it had some tyres, track rod ends and new hinge for the filler flap.

With that kind of mileage, if it starts and runs OK and if it's cheap enough I wouldn't think too deeply about it if it suits your needs.  :y

Edit: On the downside, my V70 replaced an E39 BMW 530d estate so it was a bit like driving a narrow boat in comparison.  ::)  The big leather drivers seat was like a favourite armchair though. Very comfy!  :y

This is plan B for when the Tourer needs replacing, plan A is hopefully a second salary sacrifice car if the new scheme permits it.

But plan b is if I don't have a job this time next year  :)

This one is a petrol,  but the low miles make it quite interesting.

Yes the S40 I had for a couple of months was also super comfy!

You'd never know, free would be ideal :)
