Alternator suspected
« on: 12 May 2026, 15:26:50 »

Hi all.....
My Omega patience is beginning to wear a bit thin. Car passed mot with no problems. Brought it home, then next day, gave it a run around Brackley a couple of times. Parked up outside home, shifted the other cars out of the way, went to start the Omega, and it just managed it. Got it in its parking place, switched off, went to start to move it forward a bit....flat as a pancake. Had to leave it, as been away a month. Just charged it up, started ok, but battery light stays on, and after consulting the guide in Maintenance Section, the battery never goes above 12 volt. It was reading 12.6 after charging. So I assume the Alternator is faulty. Can't hear any suspect noises, so could it be the bit on the back which has failed. Distant memory of my gold estate thinks I just renewed that part, whatever its called.
Would I be correct or just daydreaming. Any help appreciated :y

I would run the meter tests first, before condemning the regulator.  :y  From memory, they'll push out around 14.8 volts when running correctly, mine was struggling with 11 volts when my regulator packed up. Best to run the checks first Terbs, as it may just be the battery has had it, especially if the charge light wasn't on to start with.  :y

I had the same on my 2.6 Elite ( now gone). The ignition light came on permanently - the first warning I had was the ignition light flashed on for a split second a couple of times before staying on permanently. Fortunately I was near home - it's surprising how quickly the battery goes flat with no charge going into it.
I removed the alternator and took it to a well established auto electrical place who completely overhauled it with quality components rather than cheap nasty possible chinese junk. It cost from memory somewhere around £60 with a 12 month warranty.
It wasn't really worth repairing it myself for that sort of money especially with the warranty

If it turns out to be the alternator, these guys are really helpful for alternator parts Tony.  :y

It's usually the reg on the back of the alternator. About £20 when I last did mine, about an hour to do as it needs alternator removed to do.

Check bearings once aux belt off, if bearings are shot, replace them as well, or get refurb/exchange alternator.

Sadly, as you've left it flat for a while, the battery is likely shagged as well now.

Thanks for the replies chaps. Sadly, as you say TB, battery could be faulty too. I have done the tests with my multimeter, Al, and there is no increase at all in voltage when revving, if anything it drops, same when putting lights on. After switching off, it settles at 12 volts.
Thanks for the links 👍🏻
Thanks also for confirming the bit on the back can be replaced, I was sure I did one in the past, way back. So I’m not going mad 🤣

Does sound like the regulator then.  :y

It takes about two minutes to swap the regulators over, but as said, the alternator has to come off so that takes as long as it takes. It also has to come out through the top, which means you are working blind on one of the bolts. You’ll need to go underneath to undo the big lead, unless you can do it blind from above, and then lean over the top to undo the alternator fixing bolts. It would have made life easier if it dropped out the bottom but it won’t quite fit, and believe me I tried.  :y

I bought "Remanufactured" Bosch alternator twice. First one in 2010 after 140 000km and second one in March this year after 315 000km (together with new starter). Afterwards I think it was a good idea, just install it and forget  it...

Get it on charge.  You got a charger?  If not I can lend you one tomorrow before I piss off for a week

If you get it charged asap, you might be able to recover the batt at least

Hi chaps...trying to strip the bits out to sort this alternator.....i've studied How To....but my car seems different. There is only one plug on the air filter box, and I think one at the bottom at the back. I t looks easier than the guide one. However I am stuck at the start....how do you detach the electrical connection. I don't want to pull it as I'll probably break it. The connector at the back seems to have a couple of bits you squeeze together. Any help appreciated  ;( ;( ;(

From memory, there is a tab that you press, which allows you to pull connector - let me know if stuck, I can pop over after work one day this week...  ...when its not too hot!!
