Aux belt tensioners - same on all V6s?
« on: 14 May 2026, 19:50:39 »

Ezekiel has decided to reward me getting a years ticket on him by developing an occasional rattle from the engine.

Sounds like a tensioner but haven't had chance to investigate yet... If it turns out to be the aux belt tensioner are they the same betwixt 3.0 and 3.2? If so I'll swap the one off the purple project as a temporary fix...

I get a feeling that there are two different lengths for V6, 10mm diff in length. They both "fit", just not properly

…………….
Sounds like a tensioner but haven't had chance to investigate yet...

If it turns out to be the tensioner once you’ve investigated, you could just swap the pulley. A quick search seems to bring up the same tensioner part number regardless of whether you type in a 1998 model V6 or a 2003 V6, but I can’t be certain of that.  :-\
Just a word of caution if you’ve recently fitted a new cam belt on this one, check that the top adjuster hasn’t worked loose, as the belt rotation and the tension direction are opposite of the bolt tightening direction. Although if torqued correctly this shouldn’t be an issue.  :y

I had a tensioner seize up and melt on my 2001 blue Estate. Middle of January, 3pm, freezing cold, snow everywhere....I said to RAC man where are you going to get the bits for an Omega at this time of day, a Friday.......he did, and although he got the whole unit, he just changed the pulley at the roadside. Never had a problem after that. I'm surprised he never got frostbite !!! :y

Quick update for this before I tottle off to work... Had fully intended to just change the pulley which appears to be the same.

Then I dropped the aux belt off the water pump and found the water pump has a quarter inch of movement... Suspect something has failed but don't have time yet to strip to find out! Bugger and bugger.

Well, fair to say you've found the fault!

Hopefully a simple replacement waterpump job, and some nice fresh coolant, and job jobbed.

Crikey. That gave me flashbacks of my water pump “unscheduled rapid disassembly”.

Hopefully it’s a quick to one to sort!!

I was about to say how lucky he was to have found it in time, compared to your unforeseen misfortune Dave.  On the other hand, if it’s got a lot of movement, where have the missing bits gone, or is that the rattle like yours Dave.  :o  If I recall correctly, it’s easier to change the water pump with the cover off anyway, so a good time to look for any missing bits.

Got the water pump swapped yesterday. All topped up with lovely new coolant. Much happier Ezekiel now.
