DG - yes, I have convinced myself that the pedal is free, although not yet removed (one of my next jobs when my back allows).  Simplistically, the rod from servo is threaded, and there is a nut that sits either side of the pedal (it's not quite like that, but you get the idea).  By loosening one nut by 10 turns, the pedal comes up, proving that main pivots are ok, but as soon as its against the nut, still have this 5mm of so that I have to pull on to release the brakes.  It could be pivot that the plunger goes through, but on test above, it felt free.  Due to access, it's looking fiddly to remove the clip on that pivot.

But I definitely will check the pedal by removing from car.  Mainly because JLR want £950 for a servo, and that can opps right off.

Wipers, scuttle and right side secondary bulkhead removed, as next step is to try to get master cylinder off the servo.

Well done, at least you know now.  :y  Just a shame that parts are so ridiculously expensive now.

I suspect that a "new" one won't be "new", just "new to the car".

That's a gamble unless you're fixing it to flog it :-\

Seeing as its rare for brake servos to fail on these, and the failure on mine is pretty unusual it seems, I see it as a viable option.

Fair enough.  ;)

I know that I wouldn't chance a used one on an ML after the mass recall for brake servos on them... And having been through the process, it makes me wary.

So the "new" servo is in.

However, now I need to reset the ratchet on the brake switch, as the plunger is now too high.

Trouble is, I can't remove the bloody switch - I can get my hand on it just enough to slightly twist it, but not by the required 45 degrees to allow it to lift out.

Any ideas?

Get gadget hands Tunnie to call round.
The usual problem with something like that is, you can usually get it out eventually, but then no chance of getting it back in.

Can you reach your arm over the steering column to reach the switch.  :-\  Feel free to give me a shout if you think my skinny little arms would be able to reach any better.    :y

It would be a bugger to drive with no brakes.
