Astra eml
« on: 30 June 2026, 21:32:26 »

Step daughter has a 2002(Astra G?) Astra convertible 1.8 petrol and the eml stays lit. The car starts easily ticks over evenly and accelerates/cruises smoothly. A cheap code reader says it's a maf fault. Foolishly she bought a second hand one which the seller assured her was fully tested and working and although off a different model(Meriva or Zafira I think she said)also assured her was from the same engine. After having this "new" maf fitted the car ran like a dog for a few minutes before the engine died and wouldn't restart. After the original maf was refitted the car restarted and after a couple of minutes of lumpy running returned to its smooth operation. What tests can I do to check whether it is indeed the maf that's at fault or some sort of wiring issue?

You could start it up and let it idle until it’s warm enough to run evenly and then unplug the MAF electrical connection. If it stalls or runs like a dog, you could conclude that the MAF is ok. As it’s already running ok, it’s hard to see how it could improve things when unplugged.
Does the code reader do live data, as very often the codes thrown are a contribution to the fault, not necessarily the actual fault.

Can you do the pedal trick on this era of Astra.  :-\

I'll try unpluging it and see what if anything occurs. I understand that the pedal trick should work and either flash the eml or show codes on the dash where the mileometer/trip meter is,but I don't know for certain that this is the case. The cheapo code reader I have has the facility to show live data but again I don't know if that will work on a Vauxhall(I know it won't on my Volvo)but will give it a try. Thanks for your input.

I've not seen much success with branded chinky MAFs from egay/aliexpress/amazon.
