Norton
« on: 19 August 2026, 11:27:46 »

I've ditched Norton after several years of subscription.

Now BT broadband supplies it for free with the broadband package.

Should I install it, that is the question.

Why did you ditch it?

Well its still as shit as it's ever been.  But your choice at the end of the day.

Windows PCs struggle to run with nothing installed with the crap commonly called Windows 11.  I'd say MS Defender - the freebie one in Windows - remains the most lightweight option IMHO, and is what I personally use on the small number of Windows machines I still have here.

I do the same as TB and I also ensure the main accounts do not have admin rights as the extra layer of protection

Absolutely  :y, Admin accounts should be locked away only to get used when absolutely necessary. And should not carry the same password as the limited accounts.

I have had no problems whatsoever with Norton on my BT internet account, with full scanning taking place automatically, or when I request it on my PC.

It has occasional flagged up a warning of a suspect internet / company contact, which it has stopped. :y

As a free service as part of my BT package it has saved me a good amount of money over the years I have had it. ;)

It is far to resource hungry and tends to impede daily use of the PC

It flags up a load of false positives, and positives that are not really worth flagging up. Cynics might say that's to give the daft purchaser a warm feeling that it's actually doing something.

But as DTM highlights, its CPU and memory resources are outrageously high.  With the spiralling cost of memory, this is unacceptable, and current Windows already needs a shit load of ram (as I type this on a Win11 PC running nothing intense, and using 18GB of RAM)

What does that mean??  Impede daily use??  I have never noticed any difficulties.  Surely, if Norton was such a challenge, BT would not risk promoting it.  Until now, I have not heard of anyone questioning its worth.  :)

TB;  I am not a "Daft purchaser" , but for me FREE Norton via BT is something I know is there, better than it not being.  It does flash up warnings as necessary, with "peace of mind" for someone like me who really goes along with IT because, in this day and age, we have little choice.  Unless you are a hermit, leaving in a cave, I, at 73, just likes that little bit of protection from nasties whilst having to use a PC. ;)

Not only does it make a decent PC run like treacle, the false positives are distracting and need extra clicks to get around.

Surely, if Norton was such a challenge, BT would not risk promoting it.
Really?  I suggest a quick google for BT and Phorm.

Turns out you are a hermit ;D

But if it makes you happy, use it.  My recommendation is not to though, as its more hassle than it's worth.
