nannying new cars
« on: 20 August 2026, 08:45:09 »

My daughter has a 72 plate Yaris hybrid. I discovered yesterday that it won't let you drive off without your seat belt on!  ??? So even if you're just moving it on the drive, you need to belted in! What a Nanny State we're in!

I've no idea if this can over ridden in a menu somewhere either with or without a diag tool  :-\

Mine just “ bings” increasingly loudly once you exceed 20 kmph

There is as you say , an astonishing amount of nannying. Try and alter a setting in the menu whilst on the move and it says this feature not available whilst car is moving. It doesn’t distinguish between driver and passenger…… predictive/ adaptive cruise is good but the “ maps/ gps” is so out of date. Bombing along a Spanish motorway and it suddenly try’s to drop the speed inexplicably to say 80 kph. You can override it on the throttle but it means you have to ( quite rightly) have your wits about you. In England I experienced the “ thinks it is a 100mph limit so off it goes” I am not the only person that has happened to!

I do , however, think IQ lights are brilliant ( no pun intended) . Much better than the useless bi xenons on our trusty mk7 Golf. But yet another example of nannying. Just leave your lights on main beam and the car does the rest. Dips the beam part “ affecting” oncoming cars. Signposts better illuminated. Enter a built up area - dips lights.

 .....
My Merc is the same, sets of quite quiet & gets increasingly louder. Her C3 though just starts off loud. I did though find out that my Smart 451 eventually gives up & goes silent if you ignore it for long enough .... found that out after 7 years of ownership while driving around our hospital grounds looking for a space.  ::)

Again, my ML has that but wish it would work at slower speeds especially so when on small B roads

Which is fine when they are brand new, and work as intended.  Bloody annoying when the VAG car is a few years old, not perfect lenses.  But then, when you own a VAG, screw everybody else ;)

Wife's Mokka has got intellilights, or something. I wouldn't trust them not to blind oncoming traffic. You can switch them off by moving the light switch to headlights on, from auto.

Mrs Opti's milk float has matrix LED's which means she can drive on full beam all the time. They work well and don't seem to blind oncoming traffic.

Wouldn't want to replace them though as I bet they cost a pretty penny. :-X

I avoid it if I can. I'm still capable, just don't like it.

Matrix headlights use an additional camera to monitor other vehicles, and turn off or dim a section of the LED’s that are likely to offend.  :y
Adaptive headlights have little motors that divert the light field so as not to offend.  :y
Both types are good headlights that allow you not to worry about being on full beam, and both types will dim or divert when the light reflects off of a road sign or billboard.  ::)  And yes, Matrix are super expensive to replace with genuine parts.  :o

I used to have a habit of reversing hanging out of the drivers door, which stemmed from manoeuvring on site with trailers etc. This habit was cured when they starting fitting safety devices that apply the EPB as soon as a door is opened.  ::) ;D

I can code out seat belt bongs on mine (I haven’t) so I daresay the Yaris seat belt can be coded out, although in saying that, a lot of car manufacturers have SGW/SFD (Secure Gateway Vehicle Diagnostic Protection) systems now, which requires vehicle specific main dealer to grant permission to whoever is working on it. Still doable by registered companies who pay for this permit, but its closing the door on the DIY mechanic.  ;(

My e-golf would do this, I found out when I tried to reverse once with the seatbelt off, it binged at me. Opened the door so I could back up to a low wall - fu£king thing put itself into park - came to an immediate stop and I nearly knocked myself out on the B pillar.

The air was blue.... ;D

If the ML is in Drive & I open the driver's door, the car will put itself in Park but, it will then allow me to select Reverse or Drive while the door is open. There have been a few occasions when it has applied the leccy parking brake .... but I've yet to work out what causes it to do so, but it then means I've to release it. On the rare occasions when I've applied it, it will auto release.
