Rule is "the chain is as strong as its weakest part" (something similiar  ) whatever it is for those going after high spec pc components I strongly advice 15K RPM disks as the latency is half compared to 7200 disks..

Remember that any icon you click on your desktop is on your disk

Disks are vitally important, and can easily destroy perfromance.  Take the OOF server for instance  

Currently no problem with OOF server

Sounds like you are in Baby sitting mode.  

Methinks a new disk controller will have to be bought very soon, but they are £400-£500  

Nearly got a new base server a few weeks back, but they seem to have doubled in price  

What happened with the disk controller, have reliability issues or performance ?

Performance. Crap Southbridge RAID.

Yep..replacement will be expensive :-/

however although I dont have any idea about the OOF internal database structure the high hit ratio sections like "CHAT" can be located on a seperate raid controller..As an idea.. if possible
