Beat This
« on: 06 October 2008, 07:06:03 »

Through different reasons and disorganisation from 3rd parties I was hoping to move this year.  However with all the let downs this is not happening now.  The bigger plan was to treat myself to some new kit during the move, one of the things was to be a new computer.

My computer is old by todays standards and consisted of a 64bit 3.0 Ghz Single core with 1GB DDR2 (long story on the memory)

Any way, during the planning for the move, I have bought a High end Graphics card, 8 GB Ram plus a combination of hard drives to collate all by bits and pieces and back all my work and software up.  1st I bought a 320 and a 500 GB ready for the New Build with the 500GB for backing up.  I then found this to be too small and bought a 1 TB drive. This then led me to build a new server with a board and 3.0 775 (53? something or other) single core I bought quite a while back.

Where is the Beat This tittle heading - not where you thought it was - read on.

Whilst backing up I have constantly been netwrking data and changing hard drives to get the new drives loaded up the way I wanted.

At this point my computer started hanging and running a bit conservative.

During a reboot I did a system check and found the CPU temp was excessive.  Seems one of the corner pins had come loose on the cooler fan (had stripped and cleaned it due to issues a couple of months back) and being the push and twist plastic type I had been too cautious refitting it last time and it had worked loose. (I allways fit this type of fan before screwing the board in place)(Wont be using them again)

Carefully pulled all the wires/cables out, PSU out, got stuck on the Graphics card (pull out pin not accesable due to double width card)  So than hard drives out and cleared coffe table to put the case chassis out.

Board out, Graphics out.  New fan fitted (this time with frame under the board to screw to)

Decided to put board back in a new but basic case ready to sell)  All going well, originall 200GB Ide refitted, DVD IDE fitted (Pioneer 110) old Grapgics in 256 7600GT.  Cable back in ec, monitor.  Booted up all is well.

Or was it?

Started adding the 3 new hard drives, found the 1TB and the 500GB ro carry on backing up, but could not find the 320GB

Went to put the computer back on line, picked up the modem, can not find the Mode,/router PSU.

24 hours have passed.

Still cannot find the 320 GB hard drive or the Modem PSU

Beat that

I am used to putting screw drivers down and not used to seeing them for weeks on end.

Not moved the the chair other than to get a pizza delivery at the door and to stand up a few times to move stuff arround I am at a total loss as to where the hard drive is and all the data (which is the more imporant concern to me)

Has anyone else got a memory as bad as mine, am sure I have put my HD some where safe.  But where the fook is that safe place. :-/ :-/

I am always doing that....last year I serviced the mower before putting it away for the winter and in the process removed the blade, ground and sharpened it on the diamonds and wet stone and gave it a lick of paint...........do you think I could find the bloody thing!

Of course it soon turned up once I had shelled out for a new blade!

If only life were that simple Kate.  :-X

Old case is laid on the Sette needing a good clean ready for my next system, none of the missing bits in it.

Looks like I am going to finally have to do some house work.  ::) :-/ :y

3 things that I never have issue with.

Wallet lives in a certain place in the house, when out and about I check for my wallet every time I stand up.  The twice I have lost it was in the car and sometimes puses up out of my pocket as I get in the car, so if it goes astray then the 1st place to check is the car.

Other 2 thing's are car keys and mobile phone.

Allways kept in the same place as my wallet, Cant go in or out of the house with out my car keys and they are on the sme ring, same goes for using the car with out being able to lock the house.  Dont use the mobile to make calls (only in an emergency) but hate going out with out it

Every time I leave a room it's an automatic check when I am out of the house.

Keys - Wallet - Mobile. :y

Are you absolutely sure you haven't put the disk back in?  You may be staring straight at it and it's just not registering.

Count the disks - use your fingers for the count.

PMSL

Because I was in the process of moving I have brought a 2 drawer filling cabinet down from upstairs.

Thinking it's the place I should have put them I pulled it out and tidied it out.

There are 2 x 300GB Sata drives 1 is in the striiped down case the other is in the filing cabinet.

I found a 250 GB Sata which is the Bot drive for annother stripped down system.

Also found a solid silver key ring a friend gave me, USB Bluetoorh dingle, 1 GB USB Pendisk and my battery operated pencil sharpener.

Bottem draw will get sorted tonight, I I know for a fact there are at least 2 shuttle computers in there and some laptop PSU but at a glance no HD's

So far the parts are still missing. :-/ :'(
