Slightly off-topic .... :(

Those that don't/can't be bothered to  use the handbrake are heading for MOT trouble .. :(  It is lack of use that causes it to seize/become grossly inefficient and fail the test.... use the brake regularly .. like everytime you park (?) and it WILL work far better with far less hassle .. :)

End off-topic .. :)

Which reminds me ..... I never did look at the back brakes on my car when something had been locking up in there. Must use the car more!  ;)

I always knock mine into N, and usually on approach to a roundabout I'll use 3 or maybe 2 for engine braking then N once down to really low speed because the whole 'braking against resistance' thing still feels wrong to me even though I know it's normal operation for autos. Always use the handbrake in traffic, gives me something to do!

I just stick mine into P if I'm going to be stopped for more than a few minutes.

If you leave the box in drive the power from the engine is going into the ATF as heat - maybe not much - but there is no cooling due to forward movement.

Also you have the fun of frightning the car behind when the reverse lights flash as you go from Park to Drive via Reverse, ha, ha  ;)

Use sport mode for more engine breaking, probably use it more for slowing down than going quick. I rarely use 3 2 or 1 unless its a steep down hill.

Talking of the "creeping" on the auto box I have noticed on the Omegas on a hill they roll backwards as the "creep" doesnt hold them, where on my 2 carltons they did not roll back on the same hill. :-/

my omega creeps up hills lol (if it's a steep hill then it holds or just rolls back slightly- i often knock it into neutral as im slowing down to traffic lights as i dont like coming to a stop and putting it in neutral and see the back of the car suddenly rise lol.

but yeah there is a clunk between any gear and neutral but thats as it's picking up the gear as far as i know

Sports mode works for me too - hate having to brake just to slow down a bit.

Its only like dropping a gear in a manual

very similar - mine has done 136,000 and still holds perfectly on most hills.  Very little noise or jerks with any changes

My handbook says it's OK to leave it in drive when 'stopped', but always engage the handbrake, because if your shunted from behind, your foot could slip off the foot brake.

Nasty, if your first in the queue at a pedestrian crossing!

I do tend to run down through the box when slowing down... I suppose it's something that comes naturally as I have always been a big user of engine breaking. I do it even more with the Pikey Box on the back!

I suppose I do knock it into N if I'm going to be waiting a while but depends on the situation!

It always seems that as soon as I knock it into Park, then the (traffic) lights change! :-? :y

I am convinced that the auto box in the XJ-S does the same, as soon as I get bored and move it the lights change.

For me it very much depends on how I am feeling, if I am NOT drinking coffee, playing with iPod, looking at directions (in other words not 'driving') then I bother to shift to N or P, if I am distracted and probably should not be driving anyway I leave it to cook in D!

XJS V12! I'm surprised you don't switch off every time you stop, not exactly built for economy.  ;D ;D ;D
The bloke I take my car to for the air con re-gas is into his Jags. He had a fantastic 'facelift'(?) drop head in last time I went there, the engine bay was as full as it could possibly be! Stunning car!
