Out in the cold again poking around and cleaning at the back underneath this time and found out that i have Boge self leveling rear shocks, just wondered if these were original or any good. They look like the've been on there a while but still damping okay, also found lower small coil of both rear springs broken off!!  but again ride height or handling affected. any ideas or suggestions cheers :-?

I fitted Boge rear shocks to mine, not self levelling, but have used them in the past and happy with what they deliver.

As to springs, a broken pigtail (the curly bit at the end) is still part of the spring and, AFAIK, is an MOT failure as well as potentially quite dangerous.  I would suggest changing them, as a pair, not just the one.

Potential problem here. car has not long, less than a month before i bought it mid november, had a new MOT. broken parts are very rusty at broken points, not a fresh break. poss a dodgy mot.

Not sure what you got there, self-levelling were only standard on Elite and not available as option on lesser model (e.g. CDX), and at any rate the original Vx is Sachs, no Boge... Nothing wrong with Boge, good brand, but this does not look like an original setup.

These are the original shocks from one of RMcB's (ex-member) Elites - note the nipple at the lower part of the shock, that's where the air-pump connects for the self-levelling action:

I do have the brochure (for 2001 model), and I stand corrected - self-levelling was optional on lesser model...

Option, in my experience.  My MV6 is non-police and had only standard rear shocks.  They were still the originals!!

Had a proper check of shocks and no pipes to shocks for self levelling like my Cavalier Diplomat for air levelling. Could these be like my old Rover SD1 where as you drive down the road they "pump up" to correct height? label on them definitely says self levelling.

The original fit self-levelling system has an air connection at the top end of the shock and an air compressor under the front of drivers wing. Sounds like you have some after-market self levellers, as you say, these are supposed to pump up as you drive along.

Springs need changing asap, you will get high tyre wear with broken bottom coil which is expensive.
