depends what your taste is tbh.. there's a few technically good guitarists (sorry if i miss anybody out) joe satch, steve vai, yngwie malmsteen, zakk wylde, michael angelo, michael romeo and steve oimette or whatever it is lol amongs a few others, clapton is good but not the same sort of guitarist as listed above anyway all depends on personal taste... satch taught kirk hammet and steve vai before anyone wants to kiss their arses :P

got to agree Satriani was the lead of leads even influencing steve Vai but you really have to apreciate the technicality of his playing, not music in my humble opinion ::)

hendrix is the best ultimately because to be a great guitarist you have to be a great innovator, and hendrix is undeniably the best innovator. all modern rock guitar stems from his playing, even though he in turn was heavily inspired by the blues. even today his playing sounds fresh and awe inspiring.

playing quickly or 11,000 notes per second is not the mark of a great guitarist. gilmour, hendrix, all of these names never play particularly fast but they're better known and better regarded than many others (particularly those in metal or glam bands) for a reason... hooks and melodies form solos and sometimes this is lost in metal in favour of playing as many notes as you can in the shortest period of time.

agree with your sentiments entirely.although I think clapton may have innovated the sixties type guitar sound (blues/rock wah-wah etc;) and then hendrix instantly took at to another level that no-one else has ever got near.
