or you could talk with your local parts manager and mention words like trade card and irmscher back box.....

obviously not trade card product but my man was willing to knock £60 quid off the list price!!!

unfortunatly my wife was willing to knock my head off so that deal is still being negotiated  :(

Gwilym

To get a TC card, you could always joing Authobahn stormers.  Membership gets you a TC apparently.  I am thinking of doing this myself as I detect a slight blow in my system.  I think that membership is around £20 and, after you have bought a few things like an exhaust, a couple of oil changes etc. you will have made your £20 back.

A general question to everyone - if you buy the parts on TC, would the Vaux garage then fit them or would you have to go elsewhere for just fitting?

Vx will fit them for std labour charge - Parts and Service make different profits so would be happy for the business. :y

In that case, it sounds like a plan.  Does anyone know what the TC prices are for a cat back system on a 98 2.5?

I am guessing that there would be an hours labour charge for fitment?

Not too sure on that, they might wonder why your buying the parts at trade prices, and then using a retail dealer to fit them  :-/

For my exhaust I bought it at the dealer, I got a lot of strange looks from people who were just picking their car up from service.

Walked out with the 3 exhaust sections, and they are huge!! Got an even funnier look buy some guy walking buy outside and looking in my boot!!  ;D

I then took it to a local mechanic guy in my town, he's your typical mechanic but does a good job. Paid him a small amount in cash (£30 backhand ;)) for him to fit it for me.

Very pleased with the results  :y

my exhaust is original, having now done 120,000 miles it is getting to the point where it needs replacing.

However, i will be getting genuine and fitting it myself, as has been said on there it is the simplist system to take apart and refit, looking at mine i will be dropping the downpipes off the manifold, unhooking the hangers and pulling the lot out the back, with it off the car it will be easier to split the cats from the centre sections.

To get a TC card down here you practically have to jump through hoops, me and the parts manager have had 'issues' in the past and he now makes sure that i practically have to beg to get trade discount.

My Vx dealer has no such problem, I booked the car for service and quoted my TC number so that the Parts Manager can issue the bits at TC prices, which he did... mind you it was only around a Tenner off for a standard service, e.g. oil filter, wipers, etc (oddly they don't use or stock Vx oil so didn't discount the oil), but the point is that they were quite happy to do this. And big thank you to TD for advising me to ask for this....

Tunnie, I had the same thoughts as you which is why I asked the question.

Mark, I have looked under the car and observed that it is a simple system.  BUT the nuts and bolts appear to be VERY rusted and I have doubts about getting them undone.  I have no air compressor, so it would be a case of cans of Plus Gas along with sockets and spanners and one or two eye fulls of rust!

My first car was a Talbot Horizon (no laughing) and I foolishly attempted to do the exhaust (the downpipe admittidly) on this myself.  I still remember that experience and I promised myself that I would never go near exhausts again!

Tunnie, I may well do as you suggest and see if I can bung someone cash to fit it.  Did you get your done around Hayes or up in Brackly?

Yep i did.

I had mine done in town for exactly same reasons as you x25xe, the screws and nuts holding the zorst together were rusted right though.

I don't like doing work under the car, and i don't have an angle grinder or anything really. So opted to pay the local guy, think i will keep this kind of arrangement. He also replaced my aircon condensor, did a damn good job, and did it in half the time a "specialist" quoted me, any jobs i can't do i'll just get him to do them.

x25xe, there is a ATS place in Hillingdon on the Uxbridge road when the zorst on my Mondeo fell loose, they pull a rubber bracket and some gunk to seal a hole totally free  ;D

Might be worth going up there and asking "if i bring the parts to you in the boot, how much to fit them cash?" Should be around £20/£30 I suspect  ;)
