I`ve just about turned myself inside out trying to choose a decent laptop for SWMBO... and the more i look the more i get confused  :-/

For SWMBOs crimbo her main pressie is a new laptop.

She prefers Toshiba, HP, or Samsung....after trawling the high street stores on Saturday, sjes not really into advent or sony  

I need it to have 2gb ram, 160gb hard drive, prefer a dedicated graphics card, 15"screen and wireless....as a minimum spec.

Price well ideally around the £400 mark but can go higher if needs be...

Any thoughts??

about 3 months ago i got a Dell studio1735 it cost £399 from tesco's and it great! the 17" screen is so nice, it also has a normal layout keyboard, i mean it has the number keys seperate on the right, it has 120gb hard drive, dual core 2gb, wifi, ect it is abit heavy but well worth it, i did have a problem with the charger but i foned dell and they sent me a new charger in 2 days foc! i think its been uprated now and it might come with 160gb, i didnt really like dell b4 but i must say its great!

don't know much myself but mid september i got my hp pavillion dv600 laptop and am really happy with it.
3gb ram,17"widescreen, plays&copies blue-ray, builtin wireless connection, webcam, windows vista, other things i've yet to discover
but it must be good if i can use it without breaking it

I've got an Acer, good spec Vista premium, 2GB ram 160GB HD Intel Centrino Duo, 15.4 screen, paid £498 this time last year, Tesco Direct.
Laptops are even cheaper now so have a good look around.
I eventually only paid £474 for mine after receiving my money off coupons from Tesco.

Yes they are almost double your budget, but they are fantastic.....and you can run windows on it if you really must

Anything from the Toshiba Satelite range. I had mine about six months & it's very good. A friend of mine had just bought one under my recommendation & she loves it.

You mention HP. If you do go for one, go for HP Compaq Business Laptop, such as 6720s (which is what I use). Don't buy the additional RAM (if reqd) from HP, go to www.crucial.com/uk

Personally,I've gone off Dell laptops recently, and Tosh have gone off the boil, hence ended up with 2 HPs.  I would still probably recommend any of these 3.  The HP consumer stuff seems to be overpriced, and have reliability issues.

Acer, as frequently sold in Tescos/PC World tend to perform poorly, and aren't the most reliable.
