Who knows about tyres??
« on: 18 November 2008, 20:26:17 »

I have noticed on my Merc Viano....that one of the tyres is rated 96, all the other tyres are 102/105.....i believe this is a weight related number.
I asked another taxi driver about it......who reckoned 96 is a car tyre not a van tyre.....and said it was a 4ply tyre not an 8ply like all the others.......which lost me a bit.

I did ask an MOT station about it....but it was the same garage that fitted the tyre.....they said fine on a class 4 vehicle.....but they would fail it if fitted to a class 7

Any thoughts?? 4ply tyres / 8 ply ? any difference? TBH not heard of that before!

I thought car tyres were now Radial tyres tbh :-?

I did have 8 ply tyres on my caravan though Dave I am sure, the guy who fitted them said they were Van tyres, think he mentioned the weight on the vehicle...

Don't know if that helps

Cheers for that.....but does it make a difference and would it fail the MOT for it.....bearing in mind i asked the garage that fitted the tyre (also an MOT station) and they said it was ok?? :-/

they could just be a bit of a half arsed garage/relaxed mot station...
it's more the fact it's in your interest if you have the right tires on your "van" for the loads it will carry

Yes it should fail an MOT....for more than one reason

2.a. one tyre is of a different type of structure from another tyre on the same axle

Another possible is:

tyre that has a load index (or ply rating and tyre size) that is inadequate for the permitted maximum laden weight of the axle to which it is fitted.  ( (See tables at the end of this section for the determination of tyre load capacity).......but that ones questionable!

Load index info is:

load    Weight
index  in kg
93      650
94      670
95      690
96      710
97      730
98      750
99      775
100    800
101   825
102   850
103   875
104   900
105   925
106   950
107   975
108   1000
109   1030
110   1060
111   1090
112   1120
113   1150
114   1180
115   1215
116   1250
117   1285
118   1320
119   1360

It's the old,old story Dave. Everything might be OK, then you have an accident and smart-arsed insurance peeps are all over you like a rash.

I would worry about your insurance, in the case of a fully loaded accident, or any, rather than will it pass the MOT. ::)
You are driving a Van and therefore should have van tyres on it. :)
