Yes, just had an update from my mate Mike, who went along to have his breathers cleaned, cam gaskets and plug leads changed.

It appears, after a phone call to Mark, it turned out to be plug leads.

Fitted my mates plug leads, everything A OK :y

My mate didn't get his jobs done though, and now he's short of a set of plug leads.

Still got a very sick 2.5

How do plug leads sound like something rattling in the inlets?  ::)

If the noise was as metallic as described, I was just wondering if there was still something kicking around somewhere?  :-/

Did the cambelt and cam covers on Growlers car, all back together about 2pm, started it up and it run fine for around 10-15 minutes then was started knocking and missing.
Turned it off.
Back in bits again thinking the worst, the cambelt had not slipped and was still bang on.
Someone then mentioned has there being something left under the cam cover, so removed the cam cover... nothing wrong there.......
Put back together again.
Still did the same on start up.
One of the plug leads was bent in a 90 degree angle so we changed the leads and plugs.
Still the same on start up.
The Master was then consulted, who run through taking the brake servo pipe that goes to the plenum off, removing the "Y" breather to see if the car run any different...... when I put them back on again the car ran perfectly, so unless there was some shit in there I really don't know but what a nightmare of a job >:(

Not read the whole story but I experienced a similar nasty noise on a 2.6 the other day. Had a faulty MAF so was running lean after startup and coughing back into the plenum slightly until the lambda correction kicked in. The rattling sound we heard turned out to be the throttle plate getting slapped against its' bore by the backfiring.

I wonder if a misfire causes a similar issue?

After doing the cambelt and cam covers the car was run for about 10 minutes at idle and fast idle while topping up the water, it wasn't until the car was rev'd hard a couple of times that the heavy metalic knocking noise, like a heavy socket falling from the top of the engine  was heard and the car cut straight out. I must admit, my bum did twitch a tad, so after looking for fallen tools and not finding any we decided to check the cam belt, which was still spot on.
