On the newer P38 Range Rovers with 4.0 and 4.6 they are prone to porous blocks.  It can be misdiagnosed as head gasket failure.  Last time we did one, the cost came to over £6k

Car was only worth about £2k

True of all the production in the last 40 years....more likely to be a dropped liner on the larger 94mm bore (3.9, 4.0, 4.6 and bigger).
