I need to borrow some memory
« on: 12 December 2008, 17:11:54 »

Does anyone not too far from me have a couple of spare Gb of RAM that I can borrow for a couple of weeks?

Needs to be DDR2-6400 (800mhz), ideally ECC, but don't think latter is critical.

Crucial, bless them, are out of stock, and won't have any for a week or so (I stick to Crucial due to good experience with their memory, and good support on the rare occasions it fails).

Not used the Dane Elec stuff for years, but that link is a con.  They advertise a particular item then in the small print say the brands may vary.

In other words expect anything but whats advertised.

Plenty of places to buy memory, though I would always go for decent memory - the Hypertec crap that our supplier at work kept supplying has been the bane of my life for years!

Reluctant to buy, seeing as it would be binned as soon as I could get 8G from my preferred supplier, Crucial.

It needs to be a quality and stable memory due to the heavy use it will get - not all memory with same claimed spec is equal ;)

I need some memory in the New Year.

If you want to buy some for the OOF server I will send you the money for it, then when you get what is needed then just post the memory on to me when you are sorted. :y :y

Not to worry, it will have to wait until I can buy some.

Just I had perfect opportunity to migrate, as I have a new server from work that needs to be built in next 2 weeks, but I'm free to use it for other reasons in that time, so would have been a great place to put all the VMs - including the OOF one - as my servers are swapped.

Its the buying thats the issue - the only places that sell the brands I would buy at prices I'm happy to pay are all out of stock...

The offer stands if you change your mind.  I am upgrading and chopping and changing all my base units ready to move home at the end of January/February time, so I will be buying maybe 4GB mysef anyway.
