XH558 Vulcan video
« on: 11 December 2008, 22:06:37 »

Don't know if this has been posted before (apologies if it has), but this is a great video of the Vulcan at Waddington in July 08. That rate of climb after rotation is just breathtaking...  :y

Amazing, the rate of climb is almost up with the Lightning, damn close  :y
Britain designed and built some amazing aircraft, shame the whitehall bunch didn't support the aviation industry.  :'(

Another brilliant british aircraft was the de Havilland Mosquito, made partially from laminated ply. One of the companies building the front was  Parker Knoll, the chair manufacturer ;D.

It was very fast; the spitfire and hurricane had one Rolls Royce engine, it had 2  :y :y

yet another example of brilliant engineering.

If the link doesn't work for you, Lizzie, try the drop-downs from the homepage: Search Videos>Video Index>Aircraft Index>A> Avro Vulcan.  :y

Two things worthy of note about XH558 in its current guise.

1) Its a lot lighter then she was under RAF days, gone are loads of wiring, all the radar systems, electronic counter measures and a whole host of other bits

2) During 2008 they have not been 'pushing her'......so in that shot whe wont have been on 100% throittle by any means

There was a comment on the TVOC site from some of the techies who have re-built her (in particular one of the sooties) that her power to weight is now such that in theory she could achieve true vertical flight!

How true this is I guess is questionable.

I do remember during the final stages of the major service them having major problems getting her all balanced and had to add some 'red slab' radar to the nose (a bloody great lump of steel!) in order to replace some lost weight!
