265 miles to go
« on: 04 January 2007, 23:36:44 »

Before I hit the magic 80K, and so I had better think about changing the Cam belt and of course the tensioner!. I think I have been putting it off, cause the weather's damp and the car's been so smooth and effortless to drive. I know the auto doesn't give you that buzz that flying round the Scottish Highlands with a powerful manual box car with good suspension does, but for my daily grind along the M62, its so comfortable and easy. Really great compared to my previous M reg Omega. Lets hope the cam cover bolts come out ok ;D(sorry Tunnie!)

Do you have 256 miles to go to 80k? if so change the cambelt and tensioner NOW... the 40k/4y interval is not a figure with safety margin, instead it is an average figure... it may be OK if you did the last 40k cruising on motorways, but if the car saw a lot of city driving etc then the tensioner may go before that.

Thanks for that, yes I will, I'm working on a shopping list for Autovaux. The Wife's Corsa could prob do with a general service as well, so lots of bits to be bought, plus I am hoping to fit an LPG sytem to the Omega, so lots of things to be done. Could do with a spare couple of weeks! ;D

...just to clarify.... at 80k, this will be the car's second cambelt and tensioner change, right? It has already been done once at 40k?

OK, MJ, you probably won't like this but.......My last Omega died on the motorway about 9 months ago, a combination of potentially blocked cooling system, -2deg outside, and a rush to get to work. I had just moved up here, so didn't have my usual garage facilities, so the car got scrapped. I then bought a 'cosmetically challenged' car from a salvage yard, some bastard had poured paint stripper over it, and the insurance wrote it off. I bought it for £2500 which was quite good, considering it had about 65000 on the speedo. I wrote to the previous owner to try and find out its service hsitory, but he didn't bother replying, however the owner before him was a lease Co, and knowing how hot they are on servicing, I would hope it had the last belt change. OK, from reading the forum I know the horrors that happen if the tensioner goes, so I am going to get it done real soon now!.  ;)

Also, at 80k you'll need new spark plugs... have a look at:

you may find some other things that need doing - auto gerabox oil, etc....

Thanks for that, yes, as I said a rather large shopping list. I remember when I once put my car into vaux in Leicester for a service, you know the brake fluid job. Well they charged me for it, but the dirt around the bleed nipples was not disturbed. Good trick that. I bought one of those pressure bleeding kits and have used it for years; it works very well, although I see there are problems with air and the ABS servo, have to watch that.
Cheers Ken :)

At 40,001 miles the cam belt blows.

It's the same as the sell by dates on food, at one minute past midnight after the date of expiry, everything is covered in green mould and crawling with maggots.

Mine must've been a special then.  ;) I changed the belt at 117000 and it had been done previously at 72000. Live dangerously!  ;D
My wife's Astra 16v had 52000 miles on the clock when we bought it & there was no documentation of a change before hand. The easiest cam belt in the world to change.
