the only other damage would be spark plugs or bottom end..
hows he killed the head btw?
bent valves or what?

to be honest im not 100% sure a head is needed but from what he has told me im pretty certain he has damage,
basically he had steam out of the exhaust and a missfire on tickover (head gasket) :(
he then proceeded to drive it 12 miles when it started tapping,,, this then stopped then restarted and about 30 seconds later the engine died and had loads of "smoke/steam"  from under the bonnet,
he has tried starting it but it is turning over really fast with total loss of compression (timing belt snapped) or jumped????

good luck

I had a 1.8 ohc pinto sierra once that blew the head gasket after I tore the oil filter off on rough ground, when we went to start it the next day (after a pull to unsieze the engine) it spun really really fast. but the timing belt and valves were all ok, depepnds how much compression is escaping and to where.

i have got a feeling(hoping) the head is either cracked or severely warped, and that there is no physical damage,, by that i mean no bottom end damage as i really dont fancy taking block out as well

Oops, that sounds exactly like my previous Mig when the engine over heated (cooling system blocked or frozen or something). It might just be the head gasket thats gone, but you will only know for sure when you get the head off and check. When the head came off mine, one of the valves had a piece missing, so I knew it was serious. You might get a complete engine for not a lot, I saw several Migs get crushed at a recyling plant, or alternatively spend a bit more dosh and get a newer car. You will get a good few bob weighing in the old car, and facelifts are going for as little as £900, poss better ?.

Best of luck,

Ken
