Possible Project advice needed

I have seen a 2.5v6 manual estate on 110K

Have been emailing the seller to get more detail on it.

Now me having mainly dealt with 2.0's I am keen to try fixing up a 2.5, my concerns with this car is the cambelt was last replaced at 70k so its hit the 40k barrier and the seller hasn't mentioned anything such as belt slipping or tensioners gone kaput which to me is a good sign, been told its drivable.

If I go for it could anyone give me any further things to look out for.

The car itself will not be driven till the belt has been changed if I get the car hence being a manual it can be towed easily.

Another thing the seller has mentioned is it has taken a slight knock to the rear on one side causing a dent.

The project itself is not a short term thing as it will be having a fair bit done to it.

My gut feeling though is walk away but if it can be fixed I maybe tempted to go for it.

as Mark says age and spec will affect the sale value...

Cambelt, Tensionors, Water pump around £130/£140 on TC ...

Haven't really discussed a price yet as I have mainly been trying to find out if it be worth it for a project.

Just had another email through now saying it has an intermittent abs light issue

Wonders what next :-/

Sounds good, just been checking my emails from the seller and states it has a short MOT i'm guessing though this isn't really anything to worry about.

The seller also mentions it has a slight oil leak and needs topping up every so often would you say this is anything to worry about? i'm thinking cam cover seal oil pressure switch maybe.

Shall see how it goes but a definate fixer upper then

I have just sent another email to double check (peace of mind) all is as it should ie no issues with HG or timing issues ie cambelt or tensioner trouble

If the response is good I maybe onto a winner.

pay no more than £400 for a '98

Resale around £700 - £900 depending on condition.

You can get more than that if you use the right techniques.....given its an estate in fine fettle I would say 1200-1500+

As long as it is just the abs light, you are ok, will be a dodgy sensor.

Problems occur when it is the abs & the tc light together....

As Mark says, it is an estate and commands better prices. I would say a 98 R should fetch £1,500 ish on Autotrader with 12 months MOT and all the work done.

Just don't tell Mark where it is, he wants a manual estate! ;)

Regarding resale I am actually thinking of it as an upgrade on mine being its a R2.5 110K and my current is a P2.0 140K

But sounds good prices for if I was to re sell it, if I have as a project (awaiting a response from seller)

is yours mini facelift?

my project A, was '98 just before facelift, and i got £750 for it.

Personally i would be surprised if it sold for £1,500 on a private sale with that millage... have seen 2000 plate facelift's going for 2k with less than 100k miles. Although they were saloons.....

Well folks cheers for all the advice but I never went through with the sale, someone beat me to it :-[

Still possibly best not going for another car as a company car is winging its way to me in the next month or so, so chances are eventually I will be selling mine anyway :-/

A company car, despite the tax, is generally cheaper to run, and you don't spend cold Sunday evenings outside getting it going ready for Monday.

Trouble is, it may be a horrible car...
