AVG v.8
« on: 10 February 2009, 07:10:07 »

Got the free version running on my Laptop as a temp. measure.

Every time I try to do an update, I get 'General Error'.

If I unistall then re-install, it's OK for about 3 updates, then I have to repeat the process.

AVG is getting more and more popular. Two years ago everyone was laughing when I suggested AVG, because Norton was the "thing". Now Norton is just a monster machine causing conflicts with own versions...
Well anyway. I'm still using AVG 7.5 as it's even lighter than 8 but as per your problem:

Hope this will help

Avast is good as well but it consumes more resources than AVG. It’s free like AVG and has got more functions. I prefer AVG as it looks nice, it’s light and I’ve been using it for something like 7 years.
There are many free and good AV software on the market, but let’s focus on how to solve this problem.
Have you checked your connection and that firewall is not blocking it? Try to update it manually, many times it needs to update software, reboot and update the database again.

Cheers, I'll try that.

Im a big fan of AVG, however tend to use another freebie now, SuperAntiSpyware a lot better and quicker.

You can also get McAfee ver 8 free of the Net, just means you have to do manual updates.

Using 8.0 in home and 7.5 in job no problems with update so far :-/

I think another software may cause your problem ..not sure though..

Isn't that an AntiSpyware not an AntiVirus software?

Think I've found the solution, if I disable Automatic Updates, and click on Updates, it updates OK.

Seems to be a problem with Auto Updates.

Thanks for your help.

As I said - it might need to download software patch which need to be updated manually, and then database. Try after reboot and see if it'll fix the problem.
