Anone any good with Boilers

My Gulfstream 2000 is playing up.  It keeps defaulting to ignition lockout and manual advised to call an Engineer.

I've purposely kept the post short as I have little to add - but can answer q's to the technically minded  :y

at our lovely student house here in Hayes (note sarcasm) we find violence helps a lot, although with gas boilers it's advised you attack the boiler when under the influence of alcohol, which creates excuses to give to your landlord / mortgage payer.

Seriously though, we just took out ours to bits, cleaned out all the crap (loads of ash) and its been going along nicely again.

Boilerman is your man, if he's lurking...

Not a huge amount to go wrong with boilers, once you understand how they work.

If you reset it, does it still fail to light?

Assuming balanced flue, does fan start OK?

Not that any plumbing and heating person is likely to be an engineer (i.e.an engineering qualification recognised by an engineering institute)....technician maybe but, the last time an engineer will have been any where near it was when it was designed! (Engineer in this country is a VERY miss used word!)

I have to say that the Potterton in my house did a similar thing....close inspection showed all the electrlytic capacitors on the board had gone dry...£1.20 and 45 minutes later and all was good again.

Pottertons (esp those of the era of your house M_DTM) have appalling quality control boards....

The board is just a typical quality through hole affair.....an 'interesting' circuit, in places, I think they perhaps used some of the'Bad Ideas' examples out of the art of electronics.....

Still, mine now has nice high quality and high temp caps in....and fresh bearings in the fan assembly....

I really need to get a new control board - the original design and poor quality means there has been a lot of mains arcing going on and destroyed the board/tracks in places - I currently have component leads and wires taking the place of a few tracks...

Other than Boilerman, I recall a British Gas Engineer joining recently but never mind.

This boiler is a huge beastie that sounds like the diaphagm or bellows have problems cos it moans and groans like never before but manual fault finding guide says "Faulty main 'ACB' pcb" needs changed

Good news though - my bank account includes emergency breakdown cover for up to £500 in the event of total loss of heating.  So just called them and a skilled operative will be round tomorrow  :y

The gas bits knacked but it has a back up 9kw electric unit that runs the shower and hot water fine and radiators to about 60% of normal, so it's not too bad.

I'm not familiar with the boiler name, but I'll have a quick look for it on the net, do you have any more info i.e. Make, model, Gas Council number?

When is you engineer coming?
