speed by itself doesnt kill, bad driving kills.A bad driver can kill easier at 50 than a good driver at 60,so therefore surely educating and training people to be better drivers would have more of an effect on real road safety (rather than grabbing headlines or filling the treasury coffers)than simply lowering the speed limit.

Signed!

More details by following this link below, as usual many of these petitions don't give you the full details of what your petitioning against,  in this case the proposal is to reduce "the speed limits on most rural single-carriageway roads", and enforing it with average speed cameras, probably quite sensible for some rural roads, so its a reduction is the NSL for "most rural single-carriageway roads", the petition doesn't make this point clear, suggesting it's a overall reduction in the NSL to 50MPH, and this is not the case.  ::)

100% Correct, it not the Speed limit that kills.

Albitz - how right you are.

I'm an Advanced/Defensive driver trainer.  Do lot's of courses for county councils re speed awareness.

Normally have 15 to 20 clients at a time for a theory presentation.   ABOUT HALF know what the NSL.

It ranges for single carriageway  NSL  30 to 70
and for dual carriageway 40 to 70.
sometimes we get 45, 55 and 65.
Also very many not aware of different NSL applicable for vans over 2 ton laden weight, and HGV's (now LGV's) etc.
Then what is a dual carriageway - it's enlightening :o
Then get told - 'but it's not my responsibilty to know etc'
Cost to find out £2.50 - that's the Highway Code.

Yep, we share the road with :-[ doing formation driving with strangers

TBH if you did 50 on most of the rural single carriageway roads around here you'd kill yourself anyway !!!  The idiots who drive way faster than conditions indicate won't be conforming to any imposed NSL anyway !

I have to agree with you, many times when I was driving from London to Hastings, I was overtaken by speeding cars only to pass them later after they had found the ditch at side of road...LOL

Ah yes, the rural A21!   Never really changed since the early days of motoring South of Tunbridge Wells. :o :o :o  A potentially deadly road for the unwary or stupid! ::) ::) ;)

Yes deadly, these are the types of road they are really concerned about in my opinion...
This is a very winding road, very dark at night, and drivers overestimate their owns driving skills, and underestimate the capabilities of their cars...

They also forget that locals walk along these roads too...

As I recall the A24 above Findon is a bit of a nightmare too. Found many a car in the central reservation there ( actually it's more a central woodland !!!!! )

Another bad stretch is the A13 into London, just before you get to the old 'East India docks'...
Now this is a main carriageway, with flyovers...often late at night on empty roads you will see cars upside down, mangled, and facing the 'wrong way' in the lanes...
This is the result of excess speed going up and over the flyovers...
Literally "up" into the air... :exclamation

Weve all had this discussion before. Speed, in itself, does not kill. Bad driving does. If you were to do a risk assesment on it you would have to consider 3 aspects 1)ability of driver concerned 2)conditions of road itself and 3)enviromental conditions at time. Obviously speed factors quite heavily in this and its further complicated by legislation having to cover the lowest common denominator. Personally, I think that some stretches of road should have their NSL reduced, whilst others could be increased.

It's not the speed that kills you, it's the stopping suddenly that does!
