I've seen ex plod Omegas with a proper front mounted oil cooler, so it can be done. Great if it's driven hard for long periods, however you'll increase wear from cold starts as the oil will take longer to heat up -- the coolant heats relatively quickly so the oil cooler actually heats the oil initially (its real name is an oil/water heat exchanger).

Its possible, there is a pretty complete how to on here from one of the Catera owners...

If I am honest though, I think its a daft idea!

The oil cooler helps heat the water faster and then maintains the oil at a nice constant temp as its passed through coolant that is a reasonably controlled temp...........this will help reduce engine wear...

Plus, they are reliable but, you have to change the coolant every two years and use a 50:50 antifreeze mix.

A top tip is if you have a small water leak then top up with an anti freeze mix and dont just add water as this dilutes it.

In my opinion, the oil/water heat exchanger is a plus feature for this engine.
