My merc failed its MOT today!
« on: 30 January 2007, 17:53:43 »

Could of been worse.....and not bad for an 7yo motor with 170k on its clock!

Windscreen failed for star shaped stone chip (one new windscreen coming up, for £50 on insurance)
Windscreen wiper (probably about £10)
Rear registration plate.....bloody hooligan mot tester broke it off!  >:( (dunno how much for one of those, £10  :-/ )
Offside rear light cluster, its broken but doesnt show white light....for sharp edges (i did think about filing them smooth  ;D and see what the tester made of it then  ;D ) £96  :o from eurocarparts on order

So for less than £200 it will have a years ticket.  :D

Just got to change the glow plugs as the warning light is on for them and has been taking longer to start in the cold......seen them in halfauds for about £40 for a set of 4.....dunno how much they are with Trade card.

Then its for sale  :y

How did the MOT tester break it off?  Quite a few MOT testers appear to be very rough with cars and somewhat ham fisted in my opinion.  Indeed, many years ago I took a car away mid test as they were slamming doors over reving it slaming the bonnet etc.

Still, at least it is not a major failure and not much work (or expense) needed.

Apparently he noticed it loose....and it was tbh.....it was cracked around the screw holes....he said he gave it a gentle tug and it fell off....but i tightened it last week...i think he must have given it a good pull....to break it.....never mind...all his other fails were fair....and nothing major mechanical  :y

Over revving can sound deceiving with diesels! it does sound they rev the nuts of them.....i didnt stay around for mot test but the emissions report showed my merc passed on 1st test....failed on 2nd then passed again on 3 rd test...overall test showed it passed  :y
I havent got a clue what it means....but i quote " opacity values max limit 3m-1" my merc passed with 2.83m-1  :y

Seems fair to me - you knew about the plate, light cluster, number plate and windscreen before hand so he just confirmed they were all knackd ;)

Opacity is how smokey the smoke is, if you follow, or how black the black smoke is?   ;D  It always draws my engineers cheeks together when the engine gets revved to max on the smoke test.....

Reg plate should be on a 'flat unbroken surface' (exceptions in law for various Lotii, etc) as well as the correct size shape and character.  If it was cracked then he could be pickey and fail it for a crack but most testers are OK with this, especially round the screwholes...

Glad its going to pass OK TD.

Thats good, most places have stopped the free retests since introduction of computerised MOTs...
