If you ask anyone in the service industry about their dealings with members of the public you would be surprised by the tales of intolerance, violence, implied and actual  and downright rudeness.

Put a uniform on, stand in the midst of a vast crowd and you can  multiply those sentiments by a factor of 10.  For the most part you cannot argue or debate with anyone emotionally charged up in this way.  Especially if there is an underlying agenda within the gathering.

Any officer overstepping the mark in such circumstances needs to be disciplined in the proper arena - and should they be, the consequences are dire.  Please spare a thought however for the vast majority of police officers who are doing a very difficult job as best they can.

Remember it's the police officer, the paramedic and the firefighter who are the ones running towards the problem whist the majority have to run away.
