I want to upload old film photographs onto my PC, so can you tell me please what is an affordable way of doing this?  Is there any particular piece of hardware that would do the job?

My system is:  AMD ATHLON (tm) 64 x 2 Dual
                      Core Processor 5600+
                      2.81 GHz, 2.00GB of RAM
                      Physical address section

Loaded with Microsoft Windows XP  

As I think quite a few of you know I know very little about PC's outside of using them, so all answers in English please!!

I'M using a scanner-black & white laser printer- and photocopier all in one (scx 4100 old model)

its software is really easy to use for scanning ..Scans are very good quality and have useful one touch photocopy ability..

flatbed paper feed is an important property in my opinion..So I didnt prefer cheaper models..

there are all in one color models also..definitely more pricey..

Honestly I scan the old piccies but dont print them again..

Lizzie you can set the resolution when you scan the photo's. You can also crop them in case you have people/objects on them that you don't want to keep

An important note : there may be also inkjet style models..But in home use inkjet nozzles somehow dry up and create problem..So I I always prefer lasers..

Maybe worth going to somewhere like Boots or other photo processing place, and asking if they still have a facility to transfer film onto CD format.
Jessops are a camera place that used to do photo film to CD.

You get best of both worlds then photos which you can then copy from CD to your PC, and chop & change however you want ?. And still have the originals safely on CD.

If you Google for "photo film to CD" it may bring up places you've heard of that can do the transfer for you ?.

Don't know if that helps you out at all ?.   :-?

I know there is a digital picture processing  / transference shop in our town, so perhaps that is an answer.

scanners have another extra ability ..when you scan printed documents you can also you OCR software to convert graphical text to useable original text format..so you can use them partially..

most OCR software handles well even with 300 dpi resolution..

Also I must note that Black and white lasers are also successful printing photos with grey color scale..Of course wont be same as color..but still good imho..

Just thought of something, don't know if it'll help you ?.

There's a weekly (or could be monthly) magazine that comes out, called Computer Active. Explains all sorts of things in basic English, and they often have little projects that they explain in simple terms knowing not everyone out there understands tech jargon.

They also have a website, think it's called www.computeractive.co.uk.

If you use their search engine using 'photo transfer' it may bring up old articles online, which you could download (free from what I remember) that will explain about film to PC.

If you have no look, let me know via OOF, and I'll see if I can send you a direct link to the article (if they have one online ?).

What sort of photos are they. Prints, negatives or slides ?

Ideally for slides and negatives you are better off (for quality) with a dedicated slide scanner.
