I think it may have been a case of "lets stitch up the new bloke". ::) but what goes around comes around. ;)

Thought the usual deal was that if you worked xmas you got the New Year shirt or vice versa.   Normally familys with young children tried to opt for xmas and the others got the new year. :-/
