I was brought up on Meccano amongst other useful toys and 'block' is the term used for the multiple pulleys used on big cranes to amplify the lifting ability at the expense of speed.  The lower one usually has the hook on it.

Why your father can't make these baffles me.  What scale is he using?  Do they have to work?
